Tram Wifi.. How could it be supplied?

I've noticed that our new Trams here in Edinburgh have a much difference free wifi service to what the busses have. Firstly it's not provided by 3G/4G like the busses (Vodafone)
But by an ISP called Custodian, which I've never heard of.
There is no separate cables or antennas on the electric poles/lines, nothing at track side like masts or antennas.

So just how are they providing a service to them which has a latency of 6-7 ms with speeds up to 20 both ways over wifi. Any ideas?

That's rather good your public transport has wifi at all. In London it is just being introduced to some underground lines. Not buses. We have had a tram system that runs south west to south east of London from about 2000. No wifi there either.

I think the first operator to incorporate WiFi in this area, was Stagecoach Fife in its routes to Edinburgh, Glasgow etc; and that was about 2008.

I tried it out in March 2010, as an experiment, on an Edinburgh-bound service.

I have similarly tried it on its longer-distance service to Aviemore, the bus carrying on to Inverness, about 2011.

So public road transport WiFi in the east of Scotland is generally widely available.

Rail is not so well covered.

A driver mentioned that he had noted one passenger using hair straighteners or similar ion the on-board Maiins supply.

Thanks, I had noted that.

I haven't delved into it - particularly looking for how it links to the great, outside world.

At present, must presume like the Stagecoach installations, uses Mobile Phone connections.

Plenty of such masts etc from Fife to Edinburgh; but rather sparse north of Perth.

Icomera is providing this solution.

X6's on the trams and M340's on the buses. Both solutions can bond/balance multiple mobile networks.

If this is an LTE system i'd be surprised unless it's their own network, Certainly not any of the 4 mobile networks.. The latency on the system is incredible for being in Edinburgh.
