Cabinet Numbering

[link to this post]

Hi,

Just a quick question that I have been wondering for a while now but I cant come to some conclusion. Around the Selby District there are smaller exchanges and the main Selby exchange with cabinets marked with numbers such E1, E2, E3 and so on, what does the E stand for on these cabinets? I think a while ago I heard/saw about something to do with electricity but if that was the case wouldn't most cabinets have E in front of them and wouldn't BT still be putting E on new cabs?

Second could BT rename these E cabs or any cabs if they wanted to or are they just numbered that for the life of them and wont change?

Thanks

Yes some of the E cabs I have seen look like this http://www.robertos.me.uk/html/bt_furniture_1.html I guess they have just been reshelled for fibre optic but also some look like the fibre class type PCP cab http://www.robertos.me.uk/html/bt_furniture_7.html
and some the GPO type cabs.

Very odd. I've never seen an E on any Openreach cabinets.

They do exist. My presumption was that it was for a clump of eo lines that got a new cab. Now the just assign next cab number.

Ah! That would make sense, though the need for the "E" isn't obvious.

Ah I see so it was just an old way of numbering them, here is two "E" numbered cabs http://goo.gl/0wH8uB and http://goo.gl/WD31bb in the Selby area.

This http://goo.gl/0wH8uB is on the Riccal exchange where 90% of lines still look EO based

The other http://goo.gl/WD31bb is on Selby exchange and has a live fibre twin

Yeah, Cabinet E2 serves Kelfield I think. BT have been rather busy in Riccall when I go through on the bus, installing two new PCP cabs and two new Huawei double door DSLAMs. I wonder what made BT start at E2 not E1 or 1?

That sounds like fixing the EO issues, if you can give us google map positions (i.e. no cabinets won't appear) then that will be great, as can then update our maps once things go live and we figure out which properties are going to be served by each.

Yeah, this is the now cabinet 2 http://goo.gl/akwiJe there is some BT dsl checker mismatches with cabinet 1's fibre cab and cabinet 2's.

I am unsure of cabinet 1's location I am assuming its located outside the exchange as it insn't far from cab 2 but cab 1's DSLAM is here http://goo.gl/ZyA34w

If you want I cant give you map positions for cabs that replace EO lines for Escrick exchange, Hemingbrough, Burn and Selby exchange and Skipwith's SCP conversion to a PCP cab?

They're not cabinets, they are pillars, Or Secondary Cross Connection points. The E stands for Exchange. IE, they are SCP's off of the exchange rather than a cabinet. Likely to have started life as a small 1 or 2 hundred pair verts fed by unpressurised cables.

They started at E0 which now appears to have been renamed EO.

Thanks, seems quite obvious now you know. I can see how E0 got converted to EO hence why you see no cabs well I haven't at least with E0 on them. This area must have an old telephone wiring system.

Can they be used for FTTC or are they still exchange-only?

Yes, the one is Selby Cabinet E1 in the one of the Google maps has FTTC, I think there converted into cabinets now and couple E cabs in the Hemingbrough area are getting new fibre cabs fitted currently.
