Talk Talk and ordering fibre broadband confusion

[link to this post]

I was wondering if someone could help.

We've been with Talk Talk for phone for the last year or two and Vivaciti for broadband for 3 years on LLU.

A few months ago, I was due to have fibre from Vivaciti installed but the engineer said there was a capacity problem at the exchange.

This was then sorted out but I had to wait another couple of weeks for the BT Availability Checker date to show as available.

Whilst the Availability Checker problem was being sorted out, Talk Talk wrote to say they'd received information that we wanted to cancel our phone with them and we'd have to have a new line and phone number.

I spoke to Vivaciti and they said when my fibre order was placed, it looked like it went as a line takeover but when the guy at Vivaciti noticed this, he immediately cancelled it.

I believe this was due to a problem with me ordering fibre around the same time as the exchange problems occurred.

We've today had an engineer round who has told us we can keep our existing phone number if we want but we're not sure how this will affect us ordering fibre broadband with Talk Talk or another ISP.

Mum says she's ordered a Simply Broadband package from Talk Talk but, as things stand, we're still with Vivaciti for broadband!

Mum's worried about being on the phone for another 2 hours with Talk Talk trying to sort things out.

Thanks.

Was the SimplyBroadband ordered as a new telephone line? Or was the existing number quoted?

TalkTalk will put in the order to takeover the existing number and broadband and move it to full LLU usually, but it is possible depending on choices made when ordering they may think its a new line order, or that you WANT a new number.

As a new telephone line.

Interestingly, when I put our existing number into Talk Talk's checker, it says we can't get SimplyBroadband but can upgrade to Fibre!

If as a new line, then should do nothing to the existing phone number and broadband but you will get a second telephone line with the SimplyBroadband running on it and two sets of line rental/broadband bills i.e. the existing and the new line.

We told the engineer that came today that we wanted to stay on our existing number and he said this should be OK.

I've just put the new number the engineer was going to give us into the Talk Talk fibre checker and it's showing as available on this number.

TalkTalk do "BT" lines (WLR) as well as LLU, so normal SMPF.

Talk Talk for phone on normal BT line and then we have Vivaciti for broadband (a Talk Talk reseller) on LLU.

The number the engineer told us he'd been asked to change us to is an MPF (full LLU i.e. Talk Talk) number, so doesn't show up on the BT Availability Checker or any other ISPs checkers apart from Talk Talk's.

From what I can see, we need to get Talk Talk to remove this new number from their systems and put our current number back on to their fibre checker.

Seems to me that you have two choices:-
1. Let your Mum "share" your FTTC,or
2. Get yourself a new phone line.

Signing up to FTTC is (officially) full LLU only. You may get away with what the engineer says, but maybe he just doesn't know that. Though they should be able to port the old number if it's the vivaciti line.

So what has the engineer done?

Do you still have an FTTC order with vivaciti or was that cancelled?

How many lines have you? Just the one that your mother has ordered Simply Broadband on?

I'm confused.

Yes, that's what I'm on, but on Market 1 without the line rental you pay £50 FTTC setup, plus £24.99pm for 40/20 or £29.99pm for 80/20.

The engineer just said "where's your phone socket?' and put a keypad device (line tester?) into the socket and a voice on it called out our number. He then said "your number's still active". He asked if we wanted to keep our existing number and we did, so he then said we'd have to talk to Talk Talk as it wasn't down to him and then left.

FTTC order cancelled.

Just the one line - the one with Vivaciti LLU currently on.

The SimplyBroadband hasn't been ordered and would've been on the new number.

Let's just say that when I put our current number into the SimplyBroadband checker it says unavailable but available on the new number.

Sorry for the confusion.

OK smile. So at the moment all is as it has been for a couple of years, and the question is what to do.

What does this checker say about your current number? (The table and the line above it please - with the number removed).

What would you like to achieve? Bearing in mind the FTTC estimates so a 40Mbps service is all you need.

The choices seem to be:

- full LLU FTTC with TT, but the number retention may be a problem;

- leave the line with TT and go elsewhere for the FTTC;

- take a bundle of line and FTTC elsewhere;

- move the line rental to one provider and go elsewhere for FTTC.

Support quality, your mother's views, and of course overall cost are considerations.

I know mum likes being with Talk Talk, as she's on a good deal with them and we haven't actually had many problems with the phone over the last few years.

I like the thought of going with Plusnet for FTTC, as I don't want mum to have anymore stress with her phone.

I don't feel too confident about FTTC with Talk Talk after reading reviews.

Everything's been sorted out now with Talk Talk - thanks for all your help.

They're getting rid of our new number (guy on the phone couldn't understand why we'd been told we had to change old number), we're keeping our old number and fibre's now showing as available on our old number on their checker (we've ordered it - paying £5/month extra for 6 months and then £10/month after that).

Roll on the 3rd Sept and finally getting a decent speed on broadband after 9 years.

It'll be interesting to see if I get the speeds quoted by the BT Availability Checker or the speeds quoted on the graph/chart on this web site.

Been estimated anywhere from 6.5 Meg to 16.5 Meg for download and 0.6 Meg to 4 Meg for upload laugh.
