BT Master Socket Question

My father has been in contact with me and wants to move his router from the front room to the upstairs spare room. Spare room doesn't have a BT socket at the moment however I can wire in an extension socket.

Hypothetical question time - My parents have digital cordless phones so only the base needs a phone socket. If we were to get the master socket relocated upstairs from the front room, could the external wire be cabled straight into the back of the NTE5?

At the moment the external wire comes in and is jelly crimped inside an old GPO box before going to the NTE5.

The extension would run from the extension IDC connectors on the back of the removable faceplate.

If you were to relocate the master then yes potentially the old master could be removed and the line connected to where the gel crimps are. Current pricing for that is £25+VAT plus a £125 call-out unless having some other work already done.

So running an extension upstairs is the cheaper option, just use CW1308 specification or better cable.

I presume he wants the router upstairs because of WiFi reasons. Have you thought about Homeplugs?

I am well aware of Homeplugs and use them at my place. I will probably need to get him some for the smart TV.

The reason for the question was that my father is redesigning the area where the router is currently located, hence his query about relocating the device upstairs.

Most smart TVs have Wi-Fi nowadays . To be honest I would personally just stick with the master socket unless it's absolutely essential to move the router.

You can easily run an extension from the master socket nonetheless but be careful where you run the cabling. Running it alongside electrical wiring for example could cause issues such as an intermittent connection and/or slower broadband speeds.

I bought those on your recommendation, when they were cheap, but only one works. The other seems to be running Bootloader firmware .

I apologise if you misunderstood me, I was not recommending them, I just happened to see an advert and thought that they were a good price.

I have a pair of Trendnet AV200

I reported it to Zyxel and they have RMA'd it.

I understand about moving the router, they are really ugly things. Mine lives under a coffee table. Never had wifi issues as a result of it being hidden.

Zyxel have updated my RMA ticket saying the PLA5215 are end-of-life and out-of-stock.
No wonder they were cheap.

And so the saga ends. Zyxel sent me a pair of PLA4215's - which they said I could keep - while they sourced a replacement PLA5215. That arrived today.
