USAGE

Hi all, I am experimenting with various limited BB options. There seems to be one single thing that always comes to light, and that's the amount of data I use at home, without downloading ANY thing, other than web pages. I send and receive email with few or no attachments.

I have an a few iPhones and a couple of iPads in the house - all but 2 have their WIFI off permanently, and all are set to NOT auto update anything.

I have used 1.1GB of data in 18 hours, 8 of those everyone was asleep. I just do not understand what is happening. It means I am completely ruling myself out of using mobile internet - the only real option I have!

Remember apps on phones run in background with things like Push notifications that require polling too, which can add up over time too.

Web browsing is also using more data as sites use larger and better images etc so can imagine 1GB being used by a full day of decent web browsing.

I don't know what type of connection you are using, but if it is 19kbit/s as indicated, then the max transfer in 18hours would be about 150MBytes (each way so total 300MB)

were that stats reading zero when you started the test?

I bought a £10 PAYG Sim card from THREE to try in a router, which is still working.

That seems like quite a lot of usage for basically email etc.!?
If no video streaming is done I can surf the web all day and only use a few 100MB - while a film or video soon munches through a few GBs!

Perhaps restrict the allowed devices using MAC addressing (or by turning them off) and introduce devices while monitoring things in case one of them is doing something strange.

The IOS devices can move a lot of data around updating photos/photostream etc. so might be worth looking at. Facebook auto-playing video can also use more bandwidth.

Also, are you happy that your wifi is secure in case a neighbour has jumped on?

Thanks all those things you mentioned are 'off'. Kids iPods, spare iPads etc, WIFI off. No neighbours so there's no pilfering data either. Everything is Mac. Today there's been my macbook and iPhone in use, just web and a few emails

I do have Control 4 that operates a lot of things, but I was ensured that this literally uses kbts of data a day. I'll do what you suggest and switch everything off and see if I can see anything untoward. Thanks!

Something doesn't add up there (or doesn't multiply/divide anyway). At 25kbit/s the maximum you can download is 11.3MB an hour. Over a 24 hour period the most you can download is 271MB.

If that connection has been steady at 25kbit/s for 19 hours it can only have pulled down 241MB of data.

25kbit/s = 25,000 bits per second / 8 = 3125 bytes per second
3125*3600 = 11.25MB per hour.
11.25*24 = 271MB.

Installed a Tmobile 3G SIM (With 500mb Data on it?!) and reset at 1.30pm yesterday... One App Store download of 60mb. All other devices have WI-FI off.

The downlink rate fluctuates.

The downlink and uplink rates are current not a sync rate!
On a good 3G connection you can peak upto 20Mbits downlink and 5Mbits uplink.
