Just in case others with Samsung TVs are having problems!
Since 24/2/15 there have been problems for some models (D & E) of Samsung's Smart TV connecting to the internet.
The problem looks like a DNS type of thing that the customer might be able to fix.
I've wasted a lot of time troubleshooting this before (thanks to Twitter) finding out it's a world-wide issue!
This site has a good summary:

That would explain the problems I've been having for the last 36 hours. Rebooting the router restoresbsmart functions for a few hours

Yep. I've also wasted a lot of time on this!
Samsung also aren't doing themselves any favours on the customer service front...

Maybe they've turned off a few servers after the bad publicity around voice recordings...
I've got an ES model but haven't used the smart hub for a while so don't know if it is affected.

Now backup and working - Thursday morning.
Pain as I wanted to use iPlayer last night !

Yes, after an automatic Smarthub update this morning normal service has resumed.
Quite a long outage! Samsung don't have a service status page so it seems the only way you can see if there's a problem is to look for angry/upset customers on Twitter and forums!
We used a Google Chromecast to get our TV online during Samsung's problems.
Perhaps buying an expensive Smart TV wasn't such a good idea when a £20 Chromecast keeps working!
|
|
|
And as I've found the £20 Chromecast has paid for itself in offers had
£15 Google Play Credit
3 months Play Music
3 months Now TV entertainment
another £5 Google Play Credit
The old adage of buy best screen you can with a few HDMI ports is still very true.

Curious - I couldn't get any sense out of my Sony for internet stuff on Tuesday night (24/2). First time I'd used the 'smart' bit for weeks so I didn't get over worried. It was fine on Wednesday.

It's been a bit of an eye opener for me with how Samsung (& Sony) run their "connected world".

Is it possible to get one for £20 at present? I can only see £30, give or take a few pennies.

Walked into John Lewis and walked out, at £30. Everything that I saw online looked like £30.

It appears there was a £20 offer last year.

The Register news article yesterday stated both Samsung and Sony had some issues but that Samsung's were affecting more people. Seems it was coincidence but others have had the same issues as you.

I actually paid £18 for mine on Amazon before Xmas.
Google/Amazon and PC World etc. often seem to have special offers - you just have to keep your eye on them

I don't do Google products but Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV work very well. When Amazon Fire Stick turns up in the UK that will be a really decent challenger to Chromecast (it does more and doesn't need phone/tablet).
