FTTC Line Speed Issues

Hi there, first time poster here!

I've been looking into getting fibre broadband and it has been quite frustrating. I know which exchange I'm connected to and which cabinet (both of which are fibre connected and taking orders). I'm 1 mile from the exchange and 0.5 miles from the cabinet, yet according to every ISP I've spoken to the speeds I can expect from FTTC are slower than my current ADSL speed (~12Mb).

Given that I'm not terribly far from the cabinet, why would this be? My current ISP (Sky) have said that while it is strange to have such a bad estimate, they can't give me an answer as to why. Last time I had an engineer out he said I had a perfect line, no noise or degradation what-so-ever.

Am I missing something, what could the problem be?

Pretty much exactly what I get right now, maybe slightly slower.

Further edit: Just checked the line speed for the house behind me at they're getting 36.3 Down and 7.5 Up � and they're on the same cabinet! What's going on?

I would guess that you will get pretty much the same as them, unless the route from the cabinet to your house (and the routes can be strange) is very much longer.

I am sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

800m is quite a lengthy D-side - only 20% of lines are longer. But your neighbour's speed is more realistic than your estimate.

However, you have to remember that the gauge and material make a difference - so if your line is of thinner copper, or even aluminium, then you could be doing worse.

But BT have been known to get the estimates wrong in some places too.

I'm around 1100m from my cabinet (as confirmed by more than one engineer).

Being one of the first to be connected to it in 2011, I was able to achieve around 30Mbps sync speed.

However, as crosstalk gradually increased as more users became connected, I currently achieve around 22Mbps sync speed.
