Am I right in thinking that 38Mb Infinity=VDSL ...

and 78Mb Infinity2 = VDSL2?

because I know at least one person who has Infinity 2 who never gets above about 25Mb because of his distance from his cab, and I think he's on the wrong product and might even get better speeds with Infinity, let alone lower costs.

Or is it more intelligent than that and drops back to VDSL automatically for longer/more noisy lines?

No, all FTTC connections provided by Openreach are VDSL2. The only difference is the maximum sync speed cap.

Originally, up to 40Mbps was profile 8a.

Then profile 17a was rolled out which provides up to 80Mbps.

The difference is the frequencies used. Both are VDSL2.

Quite right.

In the case of up to 40Mbps, the line rate is artificially capped.

I believe on Plusnet the line actually runs at the maximum rate but is capped to 40Mbps at Plusnet's end. I don't know if that is the case with other ISPs.

That was the case for the relatively short time they had a 40/20 product, as that was the only way to provide it.

They ditched that and now supply the bog standard Openreach 80/20 and 40/2 options. With an incidental loss of maximum throughput for lines capable of above 40Mbps sync.

Legacy 40/20 customers do exist with no change to their service.

They still do. Most ISPs provide it. TalkTalk (Retail) and Plusnet don't. Again, I expect with some legacy customers on that from pre-40/20.

When my parents phoned up for offer deal on their broadband. Plusnet will not offer 40/20 anymore in a new deal, only 40/2 so instead they decided go for 80/20.

I'd ask him to look at the DSL checker and see what estimates BT suggest for his line. If its no more than 40Mbps then he may as well (if they can) drop down to a 40/10 40/20 product and save money.

If he is on a long line then thats the limiting factor.

(BT may tell you otherwise though, as I experienced recently but there are some people who work in ISP's who unfortunately are not trained well)
