BT never misses a trick.
Line rental increased to £17.99 as announced.
Saw there is an additional charge of 53 pence in my latest bill, up to £18.52.
Wonderful BT tell me the 53 pence is because of billing dates.
Never miss a trick do they.
I never use BT except for their land line.

The alternative is the TalkTalk method whereby they apply price increases on the first bill following the price increase date. So for a price increase on 1 Jan 2016, people billed on 1 Jan 2016 pay a whole month at the increased price, but people billed on 31 Jan 2016 have (almost) the whole of January at the previous lower price.
BT apply price increases pro-rata, and that seems fairer to me.

They charge in advance. Therefore the adjustment is to account for the part of the month where the price went up but you hadn't been charged for it. For a company that bills in advance that is not unusual - you could argue they should have sorted it on the previous bill so the adjustment wasn't necessary but maybe their systems aren't setup to do that.

In answer to RobertoS My broadband is not with BT.
The really annoying issue was that MY BILL showed that there was a charge of 53 pence
in the Box which reads as 'Unlimited Weekend Plan'.
No other explanation given.
From that, I presumed that in the FUTURE there would be a charge for the above Plan.
I am aware the amount is trivial but I don't care for Monopolies.
I do not use BT for telephone calls.

In which case move the line to Pulse8, (it goes to the Business rental so click the Home tab), like I did in August after 46 years! I now pay £13 plus £1 for Caller display. The still want at least £25pm for broadband + phone line (AIUI)

The OP hasn't mentioned wishing to change their broadband provider, and IIRC we haven't a clue who it is at the moment  . The Pulse8 line rental suggestion is simply to get away from the extortionate BT line rental, as I did.
At the time my broadband was with Plusnet, now with AAISP.

After being given the tip by RobertoS I've recently moved my line rental to Pulse8. Anybody who is currently paying BT for their line rental but using a different ISP for their broadband can move their line rental only to Pulse8 and it won't affect the broadband at all.

I thought I gave a specific point of view regarding the BT Billing.
Will explain further. Saw my Bank Statement, showing the increase of 53p.
Went to BT My Bill and here is what I saw.
An ENTIRE box contained the following:
UNLIMITED WEEKEND PLAN. 53 pence
Next Box clearly separated from the above shows a charge of £17.99
TOTAL BILL SHOWS £18.52. TAKEN BY DIRECT DEBIT.
NO OTHER EXPLANATION GIVEN, That is the ANNOYANCE, leaving me to wait for my next bill to see is if the 'normal' charge has increased or not.
An arrogant approach by a Monopoly.

Welcome to the world of inflation (which the government claims doesn't exist) You might be misunderstanding what inflation is. Inflation is a value calculated by looking at the price change of a small number of products and services. The products and services included varies over time in an attempt to make them representative but the fact is that a given official value of 'inflation' should not be assumed to apply to anything in particular.

So just because the official figure is 'x%' that does not mean that the cost of product 'y' or service 'z' has increased by that amount.

The price increase was from 20th Sept and you normally pay in advance.
So I the bill runs from say 6th October. the days from 20/9 to 5/10 would have been charged at the old rate and you are now being asked to pay the additional amount for the new rate £1 * 16 / 30 53 pence rounded.
