Talk Talk Fibre Optic Pathetic!

[link to this post]

My ISP service is to CRY for!

I upgraded to Fibre Optic with TalkTalk last year and the actual speed wasn't that noticeable. But in the past few months it has been dreadful. I can't even watch youtube videos without buffering all the time.

I have tried everything. Speed tests (speedtest.net etc) show different results all the time and are not consistent. I don't give them any credence whatsoever they are just a gimmic site to get ad affiliate commissions. I have 2 laptops and when I do a side by side speed test they I get quite different results.

I am ready to switch and open to suggestions.

Thanks

Pete

When you run the tests are they via WiFi or via an Ethernet cable?

The modem is HUAWEI HG533 sitting on top of an openreach modem for the Fibre optic service.

How do I access the line stats?

Thanks

TBH you should use wired Ethernet cable to the router wireless can have it's own issues , making a proper diagnosis harder /impossible

Bad idea. Wifi is a compromise. You trade reliability and speed for convenience. The only way to get meaningful test results is to perform them wired.

Good news, you can get the stats out of it but you have to unlock it by loading unlocked firmware.

It's a lot more difficult on an ECI.

Instructions are here https://huaweihg612hacking.files.wordpress.com/2011/...

If that hasn't put you off the latest unlocked firmware is here https://mega.nz/#F!LdJFDIJL!e_E1twsIg2kTet8mPjrb4w!a...

Agreed.

Would feel lost without that firmware!

When you say "side by side" do you mean at the same time? If so then this is a bad way to run a speed test as both machines are vying for bandwidth and the results will be quite random. When doing a speed test you need to make sure nothing else is doing anything on the network - any devices doing any sort of downloading or uploading will affect the results to a greater or lesser extent.

Cough, TalkTalk supply an all in one Huawei router with Wi-Fi, NOT the HG612 which is what that firmware hack is for.

There is our speed test they can run which is less littered with banner ads at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest or if really adverse to adverts they can use http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest (same test but with no extra page content)

Doh!

They've done the all in ones for so long did not think they had many left with the OR stuff.

The 533 is just an 802.11n device (I believe) so Wi-Fi is going to be a very likely cause for problems, rather than the more recent dual band units.

The 533 is actually B, G & N so potentially up to 300Mbps (I did say potentially). Whether or not the TT device has inhibitors in their firmware - no idea.

When you say "on top of", do you mean physically? I originally took you to mean "connected to".

If physically, that's a bad idea as it could cause either to overheat, particularly the Openreach modem. Ultimately it could fail.

OP says he has has HG533* which is ADSL and EWAN, the later Talk Talk 'super router' HG635 is all-in-one with VDSL modem.

Seems like the website died. Archive.org still has it though.
