i just had a conversation with bt options dept i am on infinity one unlimited up to 38 mbps i asked about infinity two but the nice man was honest and said i would get the same speed on infinity two as i am getting on infinity one so why is this he says it is because of the distance i am from exchange infinity two is up to 76 mbps

Infinity 1 and Infinity are the same VDSL2 technology underneath. The difference is that if you connect at say 44 Mbps on Infinity 2 you would get slightly higher downloads than if you bought Infinity 1 that is capped at 38 Mbps download speeds.
So yes distance from the cabinet is the factor, so only if you are nailing 37 to 38 Mbps on speed tests with 8 to 9 Mbps uploads too, is there a chance that an upgrade to Infinity 2 will give better speeds, i.e. it will remove the cap. How far can be judged from router stats or https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html

Though the OP stated BT were referring to exchange distance ??
|
|
|

I suspect either the OP, or the customer service agent confused exchange with cabinet, distance to the exchange is irrelevant for FTTC connectivity as I'm sure you're aware.

Judjing by my post, it looks like I'm aware, though I was pointing out that Andrew was posting as if he was not, which I am sure you are aware!

I was fully aware, and just made the assumption they were actually referring to the green street cabinet as other poster suggested.

A lot of punters call a cab a exch, so i just call it a green box !
these comments are my own and in no way represent any company that i may or may not be linked too.

Most people call the PCP the green box. A lot of Virgin Media cabinets are also green boxes.

I've never noticed anyone referring to a cab as an exchange.

I have.... funnily enough it was BT...
I think its because after so many years of people getting to understand that ADSL was based on distance from Exchange to CPE that now they don't want to confuse anyone with the whole Cabinet to CPE....
Maybe because someone might ask why there normal broadband don't go faster now theoretically the DSLAM is closer (not in those words of course)
Sky also did it few months back too...

I can understand people getting confused with distance to the exchange (ADSL) and distance to the cabinet (FTTC), but not actually confusing the exchange building with a street cabinet.
|
|
|
But the average person doesn't know or pay attention to the cabinets...

Most people call the PCP the green box. A lot of Virgin Media cabinets are also green boxes. Virgin Media boxed are slightly darker green and slightly lighter green and they had several digits on the top left or right side of the front of the cabinet.

or Grey and not all have numbers on them.... (though they probably should do...
In the south east they are green with odd grey and all have the numbers you speak of but in Birmingham they have no numbers and they come in green, blue, grey and even purple in one area...

True, I think the colours are possibly chosen by the council they are in.
Perhaps the ones without the number are the old ones?

Purple? I guess thats Bournville
BT ADSL customer getting 1.7 Mbps (0.6 Mbps up) on a new road / new build development
CAB not FTTC enabled, not part of the 66% commercial plan. Not rural - no BDUK funding
(Virgin Media nearby)

Well AFAIK the Birmingham cabs are much newer than the ones in the south east and no numbers but then theres less bigger ones in Birmingham where I find theres a lot more smaller cabs in the south east....
there was three on my old road and they where around 250 yards apart each where as Birmingham equivalent would of been one and that would of served further probably removing another from the adjacent road...

I've never noticed anyone referring to a cab as an exchange. Me neither, it's referred to as the Street Cabinet.
