Hi just after some thoughts on whether its worth getting some cabling changed / re routed or not. The black drop cable currently comes down my house with a few meters of slack on it and into my cellar which then connects to a junction box. Out of which is a old cheap looking grey cable that runs through the floor for about 6 meters and into the master socket. As I live in a rural area my speeds are not great so ever gain helps. Quiet line test is ok so i'm just wondering if its worth the bother or not. Its annoying as there is no real easy way to test this out as im not allowed to touch the cabling before the master socket. My line is very stable and at the 6db up and 6.10db down and I believe the BT default is 6.0db.

To be fair, if it ain't broke, don't fix it !
Hopefully no extension wiring after the NTE ?

nothing connected to the plate at the bottom and ive got a new style openreach vdsl filter plate on it

Well that sounds positive. What line stats does the router show ? Attenuation, sync rate, snr etc.
only gives me the sync speed and db above, im getting the new HH5 next week which should give me some more details I believe. Ive ordered faster broadband to see if it improves my connection speed or not but im not holding my breath.
12:47:49, 23 Feb. ( DSL noise margin: 6.00 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
12:47:48, 23 Feb. ( ) DSL line rate: 639 Kbps upstream, 3864 Kbps downstream

What router are you using at present then ?

One comment I can add to those of Zarjaz.
Is the grey cable the old "figure of eight" or "bellwire" style? It was used many, many years ago for phone cabling. If so, keep any electrical devices away from it as the noise immunity is poor.

Probably bell wire but I'd need to double check. There are electronics sockets and stuff near it within 30 or so cm's. What symptoms would electrical interference cause?
Slow connection speed for the attenuation/length of line.
Another thought - just in case. Is this the only wire out of the junction box? I'm also not happy with "comes down my house with a few meters of slack on it". That doesn't sound like a BT job so may be DIY from before you moved there. Is there another entry point near the top of that?
The indispensable man or woman passes from the scene, and what happens next is more or less the same thing as was happening before.
My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. Sync 59504/15641kbps @ 600m. - BQM

Yes there used to be a porch that's no longer there hence the slack.
I take it you mean slow connection if I had interference and not that I have?, I also wondered with the hH5 can i get better stats to show attenuation on fttc faster broadband and adsl2+?

It's probably the old 2 pair (blue/orange & green/brown) internal cable. Nowt wrong with it in my experience.

Which is now the new cable ! but with a white outer covering .

You can get the stats from that.
Everything I've read said you can't in the HH4

Open the admin page for the router, http://192.168.1.254
take the advanced settings tab at the top
log in (the admin password is on the little card on the back of the router, or underneath if you've lost that.
the broadband tab should get you somewhere near the detail
I can't remember exactly as I'm on FTTC and it doesn't show stats for that, just adsl

It will not be "bell wire" just that it looks like it. BT did use a version of dropwires in that config and I have often seen the last few metres in place, inside the property, when the external has been changed.
You may not actually notice anything wrong however the electronic noise is permanently raising the noise floor and as your modem maintains a nominal 6dB margin you speeds could be lower. At 30cm with untwisted cable - there is the potential for pickup. Not really much you can do except move the electronics a little further away, if possible.

Hence hoping to see the full stats to judge what is or isn't going on.

I don't think that full stats are available from the HH4. IIRC, BTr locked them down so that only basics such as attenuation and sync are available.
Was this the grey solid core stuff?
I was always able to get them from mine I thought ?
Maybe not though, my memory ain't what it were. If all else fails go get your one of these from the van,
you can definitely get the stats from that.

Yes, some of it was copper coated steel. That provided the conductivity and strain capability for the drop wire. I had about 10m of it here which was replaced when I was on ADSL - it gave a noticeable improvement, possibly some down to re-routing and some to improved noise rejection.

Ok cable looks to be 2 core for internal wiring and runs close to mains in places. The drop wire crosses the main electric into my hoyse in one place also . here are some photos .. I could get the drop wire to come straight into lounge and then run cat5e 7m to modem if i thought it would help.

Not according to BT Care although perhaps a later firmware update changed things.
lol... I've got more routers/modem routers than I can shake a stick at and I don't use BTr at all.

That looks like the old solid core stuff but if it's BTO's side of the NTE, you're not allowed to touch it. You can do anything you like as long as it's on your side of the NTE.

The black is dropwire 10 and is ok. The grey is very old dropwire 8 and is not good for BB as its untwisted.

That certainly looks like older dropwire that was then run into the house. The proximity of the power cables certainly could be a source of noise, if there is anything on that ring that could cause it
IF you had BT in to relocate the master to just where it comes into the house, then install the modem close by you could alleviate the possible noise or split it to voice and xDSL at that point, then run both up to the house in Cat5e/6 you could reduce the noise pickup. However, as has been said, if it works, why interfere too much.
If it was me, I would have the master relocated and accept teh cost of doing so, knowing I had removed sme potential issues.

Look back - I identified it yesterday.

So I was thinking get black drop wire into house directly to new master socket with the VDSL faceplate and then run 6m of cat5e to the modem.
That would work but remember the moving of the master is a BT task.
From the faceplate run one pair in the Cat5e for voice and a second pair for the VDSL signal.
It will tidy everything up and probably remove some noise - no guarantee though.

When I move to fttc faster bb as hh5 with the more detailed stats give me an idea of if I seeing interference? IE should I wait before changing cabling
