BT HH5 to Modem Router Combo

Hi All,

I thought I knew what i was doing!

Ok so I was with BT on Infinity 2, using a Homehub5 plugged into a mk3 socket.

Wife decided we should shift over to UW. They provide a [censored] modem/router in one.

As I never really like the HH5 I decided to buy a seperate router ASUS AC87U and a openreach modem off ebay.


current situation is my HH5 still works (even though I am now with UW) but if I plug the DSL connection into the bt openreach modem it just sits there flashing.


I set up a PPPoE connection on the router and it just keeps saying it cannot detect my connection type.

my understanding was the OR modem is just dumb plug and play, and the techbit is getting the router working between the LAN and WAN?

Have I missed something or have I got a faulty modem? I have a ECI focus B, was thinking of buying a huawei version of the modem and see if that worked.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It should be the WAN connection on te router that is connected to the modem

You do have fibre (VDSL2 FTTC) do you?

The HH5 will work on ADSL and VDSL2

The openreach modems (as supplied) will only work on VDSL2

Yes Sorry, Maybe I was not clear. I know my connections are correct modem to router.

that aside the modem on its own is not connecting.

Hi, I thought I had VDSL? was getting 72mb with infinity. I am not sure how I tell if it is ADSl or VDSL???

What speed does the HH5 report on UW?

Currently 30 down 10 up, I am not sure if the drop is because I have been messing turning the hh5 on and off consistently though.

Try using the modem and the HH5 - plug the dsl connection into the modem and connect the modem LAN1 to the HH5 red WAN socket and see if that works.

Just tried what you suggested.

The modem acted the same as if it was connected to my router.

Power comes on then lan1 (I see activity on Lan1) then DSl light starts flashing.

How can I tell if I am on VDSl or ADSl? is it my max speed?

is it possible I bought a dud modem?

Just to confirm my setup I tried before.

MK3 socket>Rj11 to> DSl port on Modem

LAN1 on Modem to WAN? port (internet symbol below it) on router

Created new connection PPPoE with username password and vlan set as requested to 101.

ADSL only goes up to 24/2 max. You have 30/10 so thats VDSL2 for sure.
