Newbie Fibre question

Chatting to one of the guys digging up the end of our road, he says they have just put in the cabinet and fibre should be up and running in approx three weeks.
My question is how will I know when it is available?
Who should I contact?
Do they now have to install new lines from the houses to the cabinet?

I am in a rural village location, approx 1/4 mile from exchange, 200 yards from cabinet.
What speed am I likely to get?

No, you will not need a new line from house to cabinet.

Speed: Assuming the checker gives a cabinet number then it will be dependent on the actual cable route from house to original PCP to new FTTC cabinet. If you can make a reasonable guess at the route following poles or manholes it is easier to give a ball park figure. As a guide: 200m total, will usually give a max attainable significantly over 80Mbps, and thus a sync of just under 80Mbps at around 400m the max attainable will drop to around 80Mbps with a similar sync speed. Obviously factors such as noise both atmospheric and man made will affect the speed, similarly proximity of radio transmitters, electric motors or generators (as a line passes a factory), wire gauge, aluminium or copper, your internal wiring, ...

So, that rules out an Exchange Only (EO) line which would not have FTTC capability.

Now, go for a walk and get a more accurate estimate of cable length.

Good. Some line go direct from house to exchange and not through a standard cabinet (PCP). Those lines are only permitted to have an ADSLx service and not VDSL which is the technology behind fibre or FTTC. Your line has a cabinet so you are fine, assuming the recently installed FTTC cabinet is twinned with Cabinet 2.

Add in the rise and fall to poles, loop to FTTC cabinet and your internal wiring and you will be around 200m. So, as I suggested before, unless there are major issues you should be looking at a full 80Mbps sync. It may be a little less, you will need to wait and see.
