HomeHub 3 to HomeHub 5 'Upgrade'

[link to this post]

Hi guys,

After a few years of using the Home Hub 3 I decided to buy a second hand Home Hub 5 off eBay to see if it would increase my wifi speeds etc.

Speed testing before hand on my Home Hub 3 with an ADSL max connection I was receiving on average 9Mbps down (more than my line should handle anyway).

I switched everything off, plugged in the Home Hub 5 and cannot seem to get anything more than 0.3Mbps down/0.93Mbps up using both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. I have left it connected for the past couple days but nothing has changed, have tried a reboot/restore to factory settings etc but nothing. Ping still over 700ms too.

Reconnecting the Home Hub 3 up I am immediately back to 9Mbps download speeds.

Has anyone ever had this problem before or know what's going on?
Is it possible that the second hand HH5 I bought off eBay is a dud?

Thanks

Sounds dud to me. You're lucky it hasn't messed up your line.

ADSL Max is an up to 8 Mbps (speed test maximum 7.15 Mbps) so if on just ADSL then something was odd in the beginning.

HH5 may be a dude, what are the connection speeds reported by both devices rather than speed test results?

Okay maybe I am mistaken about the connection type it is ADSL.
On the Home Hub Manager at the moment (HH3) downstream is 14.18Mbps up is 1.1Mbps. If I recall correctly checking on the HH5 it gave it as some 15000kbps (15Mbps)?

I guess that might be auto correction again wink

I would recommend splitting the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks - ie give them different names, and try again

I tried this but gave the same results. I also tried using the HH3 cables in the HH5 but also gave the same results.

That is ADSL2+, not ADSL (Max).

Try a factory reset, that is a pin in the little hole in the back for 20 seconds and the light will turn green.

If you have made any settings, you can back them up first and restore them later.

Did you try a speed test using an Ethernet (wired) connection to the new hub to see if the problem is with low sync speeds or poor wireless reception?

Have just tried this, getting same results. 1Mb down. Connecting 15000Kbps.

Using same setup on wireless connection as macbook does not have an ethernet port.

I contacted BT last night and got the same old story that they cannot find anything wrong with the line - after me constantly explaining the situation and that my minimum should always be 5Mb.

I can't see how it's a line problem as the HH3 is fine. It's more likely to be the router at fault.

Have you got a mobile phone with wifi, to see if the speeds on that are as bad when connected to the HH5?

Can you ask a friend with a Windows laptop with ethernet to pop round with it? (And their ethernet cable if you don't have one with the hubs).

Just checked with iPhone 6 getting 290Kbps.

Just looked out an old laptop from the loft, will post results in a moment.

Don't be surprised if the old laptop starts downloaded loads of Windows updates. You may need to get all that sorted out before you get a valid speed test result, though you'll probably be able to see much better that 0.3Mbps even if it's doing those.

Have run with ethernet cable, 0.7Mb down/0.35 up.

Having seen the sync speeds now, yes not a line problem or an issue with the ADSL2+ side of things.

Factory reset time or failing that bin time.

Sounds faulty to me. You should raise it with the seller. In all honesty though, the seller probably just used it at those slow speeds and assumed BT sucks.

Definitely you should be returning it to the seller for a refund.
