I have a very basic NTE without built-in filters.

I have separated the phone wiring from the modem wiring at that NTE, with a single VDSL Splitter/Dongle in the NTE socket.

This works successfully, so there is no need for a collection of similar Splitter/Dongles at every phone outlet, reducing the risk of parallel losses.

On an EE (up to) 40/10 contract, about 300 Metres line length from the FTTC via PCP, I get very consistently 37.2/9.0, at 13.6 db download attenuation

You have to be careful with some dongles as they don't filter the ring line. I prefer the Interstitial plate option myself.
