The only place in my house I get a full 317Mb out of my connection, on a laptop using WiFi, is right next to my router (ASUS N66U) Elsewhere in the house I get less than my headline figure of 300Mb. In the most distant corner I may only get 80Mb.

Fortunately I have set up an ethernet network around the house too, using cat 5e cable. ( Never use less, even for your patch cables.) I can get 317Mb everywhere in the house. I guess it all depends on what you require for your daily use.

This has raised for me, the question of how much use is being made of the 5 GHz band compared to 2.4 GHz.

In my locality depending on time of day, I can see from 5 to 25 of the 2.4 GHz circuits around me, including the occasional Stagecoach bus.

But my own 5 GHz circuit is the only one visible, using inSSIDer, Acrylic or NetSpot.

As the laptop is relatively hefty, I don't propose exploring the estate in depth.



However as you and other forum participants may be in busier locations, I wonder what the quantities of both bands that you may be able to locate.

Acknowledging that generally 5 GHz is a later development and does is more rapidly attenuated to an undetectable level, so generally is likely to be significantly fewer.

I was "house-sitting" today, and got some indication of the relative amounts of 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz.

Using NetSpot as I was also doing a survey-

16 Wi Fi Circuits Total

of which

3 were 5 GHz

The majority were BT variants, with the 16th being SKY which was 2.4 GHz only.

The BT included 2 FONs, again 2.4 GHz only.
