Huawei HG612 with Linksys WRT1900ACS

Hi all,

I'm having a load of problems with my Zyxel VMG8924-B10A router-modem-SIP adapter which seem to be a mixture of hardware and software issues. Anyway, this is really annoying so I'm considering switching to something more reliable.

I want to use the following config:

Huawei HG612 (as modem) - Linksys WRT1900ACS (as router and AP) - Obihai OBi202 (as VoIP/SIP adapter).

My question is therefore: should this work or not?

Does the HG612 have a UI that I can/need to configure with PPP details, or is that handled by the Linksys router/AP? And is the Obihai OBi202 usable on Sipgate/AAISP VoIP or can it be configured to do so?

hmmm..I would try the zyxel in bridge mode before "downgrading" to a hg612 (these are getting long in the tooth now).

Either way the linksys handles the PPP.

I would agree the ZyXEL in bridge mode as opposed to the HG612 is a better option as there have been posts on here about HG612 becoming erratic.

Well, my first router apart from anything else the 2.4GHz WiFi broke completely. Then it kept on restarting randomly. My second unit is doing the same, and the VoIP is unreliable. IPv6 also only works when it feels like it, half the time.

I can't imagine the HG612s can be worse than that?!

Nothing wrong with a working HG612 in good condition, they are rock solid. I had one on my FTTC line (Huawei cab), only got rid of it due to getting FTTP installed. I tried nearly every vdsl2 modem under the sun, Draytek 130, Zyxel models, Openreach ECI, Netgear DM200 et al and whilst some of them synced a few meg higher the HG612, they were far more unstable (more errors) than the HG612 so I always kept returning to the HG612. The Zyxels were the worst (in bridge mode), horrible latency...uuurggghhhh no thanks.

OP, yes that combo should work, PPPoE credentials should be entered in the Linksys router. The Linksys WRT1900ACS is a decent router, not a bad choice at all - you will notice the wifi coverage/range is far superior to your Zyxel. However no idea about the VOIP/SIP adaptor.

The WiFi is fine on the second Zyxel - so I'm just looking for something stable that doesn't reboot when it feels like it several times a week/day, and where IPv6 and VoIP "just work" rather than being intermittent like they are now.

Ok, I think I'm sold then. HG612 and WRT1900ACS it is.

Now just to see about that VoIP adapter...

I'd second that. I have two HG612's and a third as a backup. Options are very limited if you just want a modem. I also have Billion 8800 NL's which work great when used as modem/router/ap but occasionally hang when in full bridge mode used in conjunction with a more powerful router. No such problems with the HG612's.

Agreed. My HG612 holds the line solidly. It's doing sterling service and can continue to do so for as long as it wants.
