With FTTP do you generally get the advertised speed?

Curious about this, My parents, for example, have FTTC with BT Infinity 1, its advertised as up to 46mb, they get in or around 32-37

If FTTP is advertised at 55mb what speeds should I expect to get?

You should get up to that, depending on the time of the day, BT seem to cram way too many connections together.
But Infinity 1 you should be fine due to I have only seen my Infinity 4 go down to 42Mbps just the once.

With FTTP you don't have the noise / crosstalk length of the line issues that reduce your speeds that you do with FTTC.

Taking the overheads into account you should get ~ 50Mbps. FWIW I get ~ 310 Mbps on my FTTP (On Demand) 330/30 service day & night, with no slowdowns at peak times.

My ISP provides a live 'WeatherMap' which gives the current traffic load on their network, no idea if BT do something similar:

Don't get confused between native FTTP, and FTTPoD which is a very different thing financially. The latter has a minimum install cost of £1250 and a three year term of £300pm or so. Reverting to native FTTP costs at the end.

FTTP does not suffer from the cross talk and cable distance problems of DSL technogies delivered of copper (and aluminium) cables.

The speed that you get depends on the equipment used and what contention there is. There are also overheads so the maximum speed will be less that the connection speed. The amount of contention can typically be reduced by paying more.

So I would have thought that it the connection speed is 55Mbps you would get 50Mbps when there is no contention. If you state who the supplier is you may get a better answer!

BT don't advertise an up to 46 Mbps, but they may give a personal estimate at sales time of up to 46 Mbps, and this difference is important....

Duff wifi, and developers not providing ethernet connectivity in new builds would come fairly high on my list too.
