Switching supplier and billing periods

[link to this post]

My current service is billed from 11th day of the month to 10th of following month, with the direct debit collected on the 18th. If I switch suppliers mid billing period will I be refunded the difference?

Different ISPs have different policies. Which are you with?

Are you out of a minimum term as well, or still in one?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - AAISP Home::1 80/20. 200GB. Sync 74496/13801Kbps @ 600m. BQMs - IPv4 & IPv6

I am currently with Zen, which has been good but too expensive. I am well past minimum term.

Hmmm.

I have had a good look round their T & Cs (Legal Policies at the bottom of web pages) and they dont seem to mention it. Searches on obvious keywords dont even bring up what there is.

You can look at it either way frown. They dont say you get a refund so assume you wont, or they dont say you wont so you will. I believe decent ISPs should refund monies paid in advance for services not received due to migration away outside the minimum term.

Considering the pedantic detail and volume of those Legal Policies Im surprised this isnt covered.

As the Gaining Provider Led Ofcom migration policy has a minimum 10 working days, which they define as Monday to Friday but excluding Bank Holidays, if they say you lose anything I would time the placing of my order for the migration to take place on the 9th in your case. They generally do occur on the 14th calendar day.

You should not need to give notice to Zen. Placing your order with your new ISP should result in communications from the new one with full details of your order and the date scheduled for completion, and another from Zen giving the same date and details of any payments or refunds. But beware if moving to Plusnet, as they offer (or used to) three dates, but they never seem to end up with the one you choose.

You can cancel migrations with no penalty right up to the date scheduled by contacting the gaining provider, though I would never leave it to the last couple of days as stopping the process at Openreach may fail at such short notice.

Edit: Tidying up a typo and the missing words "details of" in the penultimate paragraph.
