Telephone numbers

[link to this post]

Who actually issues providers with the phone numbers they rent to customers? Is it Oftel?

Is there any way to contact Oftel to verify that a number was allocated to a particular provider?

For example I have a number originally allocated to Bell Cable Media which I assume would be listed under Virgin. This number was ported to BT then to VOIP, so will there be a record somewhere?

There are a few lists on the Internet; how accurate are these for example - http://www.area-codes.org.uk/070-personal-numbers.php

It is actually OFCOM and their website has full lists of the numbers: http://static.ofcom.org.uk/static/numbering/#geog1

At the bottom of the page I linked to previously there is a lookup field to find who now operates your number. Mine says BT. My rental is paid to Pulse8.

It appears that the two Sipgate numbers I have belong to Magrathea Telecommunications Limited. The numbers 'belong' to different parts of the country
