Benefits of cab reshelling

[link to this post]

Checking roadworks.org for my area shows alot of work planned to reshell cabinets in my area.

From memory all the locations have older style PCP's and not the newer kind.

Is there any benefits to this being done for maintenance reasons or is it for future upgrades such as Gfast?

Nope, usually just more space to fit in more tie pairs for VDSL2 or G.fast.

It's probably for G.fast. That requires the latest and greatest cabinet shell.

The latest design of PCP has removable sections in the side panels to make the installation of GFast pods or FTTC tie pair expansion pods easier. I assume on the earlier version of this shape of steel PCP, holes had to be cut in the sides to add the pods - or perhaps the whole side panel had to swapped out on the PCP.
