Must have been fun in the past using a hammer or golf ball...

No in the past about it ... hammer and lob it is still the preferred method for most.

A pair of swimming trunks would have been less expensive.

A pair of swimming trunks would have been less expensive. I'd expect the Health & Safety issues and the Risk Assessment for that approach would be far more arduous than training for and using a drone.

And heavy duty neoprene suit too ... the Findhorn is freezing at this time of year.
At least they did it out of the fishing season too.

I think they should give you the sort of kit they use for launching lines between ships. I was on HMS Cardiff in the Channel when a line was fired across to another ship for a towing exercise. It's basically a rifle with a grenade launcher attachment and a bit of string

A bit OTT for lobbing a dropwire over a couple of branches.

Would one of these be cheaper/safer/betterer ?

|
Don your swimming trunks and swim it, none of this new fangled technology to get a bit of wire across some water

Would one of these be cheaper/safer/betterer ? A couple of slight problems there sir. The Openreach team used the innovative method to reach a home on the other side of a 50-metre wide stretch of river in Glenmazeran. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.
50 ft (15 m) range allows for faster installations with fewer pulls

The sight of my scrawny old bod in budgie smugglers as I doggie paddle with a length of hairy twine 1A between my teeth would be unpleasantly visible enough thank you.

Well said!
I was lost for words! Possibly because my brain shut down as soon as I tried to think about that picture.

The North Sea can be warm compared to some of those rivers!

It's basically a rifle with a grenade launcher attachment and a bit of string In Wales last year, it was a drone with a fishing-rod attachment - or a fishing rod with a drone attachment
