Openreach No longer Using Huawei Equipment. Apparently.

[link to this post]

Had engineer number 12 round to today with my ongoing problems and we were chatting generally, and he said that OR will no longer be installing Huawei cabinets, and moving over to Fujitsu.

He also said that the existing Huawei equipment will be removed and replaced. at some point.

Make of that what you will.

Disclaimer: I have no hard evidence of this, just small talk.

I have strong doubts about that. I could believe it if it were the ECIs they were replacing.

We know that core Huawei network components have been being replaced gradually since 2006, so maybe he has just picked up a garbled story.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

A lot less VDSL2 cabinets are being installed and never seen a Fujitsu VDSL2 cabinet in the wild yet

What Openreach has declared is core network will not be using Huawei kit - and the VDSL2 cabinets are not core.

Replacing 50,000+ cabinets will cost a fair chunk of money that am sure would mean it would have been mentioned in financials due to the impact on costs/revenue i.e. replacing these creates no extra revenue

Ah ok, so it wasn't all just hot air.

He did also mumble something along the lines of because it being Korean but thats probably BS.

Must admit, i did struggle to agree about replacing all the existing cabinets.

Surely once FTTN or FTTP is up and running, the local cabinets would be no longer needed?

Given not all providers who sell over FTTC sell a FTTP product yet, ripping out VDSL2 cabinets is a long way away

Huawei is nothing to do with Korea, it is a Chinese company

Indeed. My understanding of it is that some of the core network stuff has Huawei code running on it, which can be updated remotely. I dont know if this includes the handover equipment youll have seen in the headend that the fibre cabinets connect to.

Ive been told that the fibre cabinets dont have any code running on them, or if they do its not Huaweis code and cant be updated by them. Thats just what Ive heard and could be wrong.
