Broadband in new home

[link to this post]

I have moved into a new flat last weekend. The previous tenant has TalkTalk broadband with a cancellation date of June 14th, so I have the use of this until next week. I want to go with Zen, but they have told me that they can't do anything with the line until the current TalkTalk line cancellation completes on the 14th, and that it can take up to 2 weeks to get connected. This seems ridiculous that I would have to be two weeks without internet. I'm pretty sure that moving into a new home that has a connection from a previous tenant is a common occurrence.

Anyone have any advice?

BTW, I'm NOT staying with TalkTalk. After some of the reviews I've read online and the experience my mother had with them a few years ago, they are lucking I'm not burning the current router on a pyre while chanting pagan rituals.

My understanding is that TalkTalk use their own equipment in the exchange unlike most /all others so that the physical wires have to be relocated. This explains the delay. When they took over my previous supplier they took ages to get it working. Needless to say I'd never go near TalkTalk again.

I have never had an issue placing orders with BT and TalkTalk when moving into new flats, even where the previous owner has set the line to be closed down. I would suggest this is more of a Zen issue than anything else. Out of interest, are you ordering using the previous tenants phone number? You should be ordering purely by address.

TalkTalk to Zen migration is not significantly different to a Sky to Zen Migration. There is nothing special RE TalkTalk... I would not say they operate "unlike most / all others."

Zen should be able to place an order irrespective of the previous tenants service, there is nothing stopping them placing a new line order immediately.

Is the 14th June correct, that is a long way ahead time wise, should be no reason for an existing provider to continue operating a line for 3 months after someone has moved out - i.e. something odd with this case

Where the 14 June date comes from is puzzling, as has been said. However this is not a case of a migration.

If a Cease order has been placed on the line itself then it is true that Zen cannot order anything. The Openreach order system does not allow this.

My guess is that the previous tenant has been (possibly unintentionally) misled or has misunderstood what they were told by TalkTalk.

If they were still in a contracted minimum term then they would have been charged a lump sum to terminate that early, as in on their departure date. That would have cost less than the ongoing payments I assume they are making, but they might not have been able to find that lump sum.

Meanwhile, presumably you are benefitting from free broadband and phone calls? But!! You say this is until next week. Did you mean 14 March, not 14 June?

Even if their service had ended the day they moved out there would still be a period between your order going in and Openreach connecting you.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

I had the same when I moved into my previous house back in 2007 and the existing line was 'blocked' by TalkTalk awaiting cancellation. I simply ordered a fresh line, which my ISP happened to provide free-of-charge. The engineer was happy to use the existing NTE for the new line so I never really saw any disruption versus taking over an existing line.
