Speed loss due to power cuts

[link to this post]

An over-flowing sink ran water through the upstairs floor and blew the electricity a few days ago.
Repeated efforts failed to restore power and the router continously cut out.

Once everything was back to normal thanks to a fantastic electrician, I ran a test on the broadband speed, as I suspected I might have issues resulting from the disconnections.
Sure enough, my rock solid 74Mbps had dropped to 70Mbps.
I won't lose any sleep over it, but will it come back to the previous speed in time?

Yes, in 99.9% of cases.

Hi

VDSL is a bit of a balancing act between power levels and cross talk. If you've been offline for a while and other modems have re-sync'd, then you can sort of get reshuffled.

Say for example a couple of people joined your VDSL cabinet after you did, their speeds may have been reduced due to cross-talk from your line, when you've been offline for a bit, a bit of breathing spaces opens up for those other users, they may re-sync and get a faster speed due to being able to use higher power levels and less crosstalk. Now when you come back online, they have the upper hand and you're seeing more crosstalk from them than before and it's your line having to now run slower.

You may find things balance back in your favour again, however you may not, it's just a limitation of the technology.

Regards

Phil
