TalkTalk and Sky Offering Different Speeds

[link to this post]

Hi,

I have been away from the UK for many years, just returned and ordering broadband, but I need some advice.

Im looking to get the fastest fibre available in my area. After line checks, Sky offers 36-39 (guaranteed minimum 36) and TalkTalk offer 35-58 (guaranteed minimum 35).

Is there any chance the higher speed is possible with TalkTalk or is this just marketing talk which they cover themselves with the guaranteed minimum?

Last time I was in the UK, all fibre was BT and just rebranded by Sky, TalkTalk etc so changing supplier wouldnt really change speed. Are TalkTalk just blowing smoke saying possible up to XX?

Thank you

N

Openreach run the VDSL2 (Fibre to the cabinet) hardware and variations providers offer are down to their marketing choices.

Sky may only be offering you a maximum 40/10 service i.e. playing it safe while TalkTalk may offer the 40/10 and 80/20. The 40/10 is a capped version of the 80/20 so it is possible you may go faster if close enough to the cabinet.

Solution - look at the range of speeds shown for the address on https://my.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/adsl.htm?s_...

Thank you very much for the reply.

I checked the link you sent, using the address checker I can see figures in the 60 region. Does that mean the speed could go that high?

Thank you again.

It means the likely speed is in the 41 to 60 Mbps region.

Sky = pessimistic
TalkTalk = optimistic but might be possible

Of course to get above 40 you will need to order one of their 80/20 products e.g. Fibre Max and Fibre Speed Boost
