Leaving Virgin Media going to Sky

[link to this post]

I am new to this forum and looking for some good advice. I am leaving Virgin Media soon due to ever increasing cost with them.
With VM I currently pay £66 a month for Broadband TV 110 channels and the phone (basic). The broadband speed is 108Mbs. I consider myself to be a very light user of the broadband. I do no streaming, gaming or down loading of anything. I read the news daily and do some emails.

I am about to start with Sky in mid January taking their package Sky Broadband Superfast speed 23-35Mbs.
In addition will have the TV package and the telephone again basic.
My question is will this speed be okay for me. I live in the West Midlands.
Any help guidance will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Graham Turner

If your decision is based on price alone how much will you be saving?

I was paying £66 a month. Having confirmed my leaving date, I received a phone call late this morning from Virgin offering me the same 12 month contract for £35 a month!!! Being old school I very politely declined their offer.

I hope my decision to go with Sky will be a good one Time will tell.

We too are light users and find plenty to interest us on Freeview so we're not interested in Sky, if it helps our Plusnet package costs just under £30 per month including this month's increases. It gives 35-37Mb and unlimited daytime phone calls up to 60 mins. Deduct £8 pm for anytime calls if unwanted. Even our former ADSL package at 12Mb had no problem streaming HD channels.

Id be very careful going to SKY. I was with VM 18 months ago and made the decision to go to Sky to save some ££s. Biggest mistake I could have done. The Broadband speed is awful (getting 7mb download speed). This wasn't hard usage either. Streaming music on Amazon Echo, 2x mobile devices updating whats app/Facebook etc. The connection drops out constantly (ie the wifi signal disappears and then comes back) then you also have the added stress of having a dish installed on the property.

Sky is also a 18 month contract whereas VM are only 12 (BT is 24!). I would suggest dropping some of the services tv channels?) and maybe see if your BB speed can be dropped down. Even 50mb Fibre connection would be faster than Sky.

Suggest you call VM and say you are thinking of leaving and see what they can offer you before jumping ship to Sky (take it from someone who did this 18 months ago...couldn't wait to go back to VM)

This is another route if you are not too bothered to have all the phone/tv/bb. Plusnet/Freeview is just as good.]

If you're happy with VM apart from the £66 price I would have snapped their hand off for the £35 a month contract and reviewed it again this time next year

.
I found the reverse Despite a 200 connection with Virgin. It used to buffer a lot even wired. Required WiFi extender to get signal in bedrooms. (small bungalow)
Now on Sky fibre max. No buffering, WiFi in all rooms thanks to SkyQ and no extra kit.

That sounds more like you didn't check out the expected speeds first.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.
