Wifi Speeds puzzle

Something odd with my wifi network. ON first install I was getting 200 mbit on both LAN transfers on both Laptop and downstairs PC. Then today my laptop slowed right down to 40 mbit and PC downstairs was 100 up 200 down.

Checked the speeds again tonight and the Laptop is 100 up 200 down, PC downstairs is 100 up 150 down. When the laptop was playing up I connected to the ethernet port on the router and was getting around 900 up 900 down but as soon as I connected back to wifi it was 40 but now 100/200.

Its very variable, any ideas?

To fill in some of the gaps I bought a Zyxel VMG-8924-B10A on ebay and again that started off well at around 200 mbits on Laptop but then the next day this dropped to 1 mbit and I thought the Zyxel was faulty so contacted the seller for a return.

I then bought an Asus RT-ac58u from Amazon which arrived Wednesday to replace my DSL-N55U and with the RT-ac58u the above slowdown to 40 mbits happened today when I was doing a TBB speedtest so test the LAN.

I have also since purchasing the RT-ac58u come across a review which essentially says that the Asus RT-AC1200G+ is a better performer on the 5ghz band than the 58u so that will be arriving today. All these tests are on the 5ghz band, the 2.4 ghz band runs a few Amazon Echos and streams tv. So effectively the winner of the tests will be kept and the loser returned. But I just cant understand why so variable and maybe there was nothing wrong with the Zyxel after all I was using as a WAP.

The laptop is an HP 250 G7 i5 quad core with 8gb ram and SSD, connected on 5ghz at 433.33mbits but when I do a locally logged in speedtest over wifi its half the remote desktop.

What's goin on?

I get similar results depending on the time of day . Am on virgin 100/10 some times its quite dramatic drop in wifi speed. but picks up as time goes on later into the evening . I have had full bore wi-fi speeds at 1 am , slightly over 100 Mbps. For me its time of day affects virgin wi-fi speed.

If you have a laptop or desktop with an ethernet port and use a cable to the Virgin hub, do you get the high speeds?

WiFi can slow down due to interference from neighbours, not just the number of network names you can see, but them being USED, which is why WiFi can slow down in the evenings as everyone uses their devices.

Changing the WiFi channel might help, splitting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and using 5 GHz where you can also helps.

Are you 100% sure no other wifi devices are transmitting at the same time.

If so you are going to get a split in bandwidth.

In addition, if you have any other devices nearby (not yours but but neighbours) using the same channel/frequency this can affect the ultimate top end speed you are able to achieve.

If you mean the Zyxel VMG8924-B10A, then yes.

If you use Wifi to connect to it from a Windows 10 PC and you right click the network connection and view the status you can display the actual connection speed.

You would be lucky to get about a 3rd of the connection speed shown above in any speed test.

This is a very good modem (ADSL and VDSL) but not very good at WiFi. You could disable the WiFi in the Zyxel and add a separate mesh system.

IT doesn't do NAT loop back and is now outdated though, isn't it?

I used mine in modem mode. I never need NAT loopback, don’t attempt to host stuff at home. Outdated? No, its a very good box, its just not designed for WiFi as it only has 2.4GHz.

In my experience a modern version is not usually better, but it may well do NAT loop back.

Why are you so obsessed by NAT loopback, you have been peppering the forum with posts about it? Is it something that is absolutely essential or are there other methods that could be used to achieve the required end result?

I have a Zyxel VMG-8924-B10A. it does NAT loop back and has 5GHz Wifi.

I think the VMG3925-B10B is the replacement. It is smaller but lacks some noise filter which may or may not make a difference to the DSL connection.

I have not had a problem in the past 4 years using a 2nd hand box but with latest firmware.

It does have 5GHz AC WiFi.

It's the identical VMG8324-B10A that only had 2.4GHz WiFi.
