Broadband Speeds

Have OR given extra capacity to ISPs as I thought the use of the internet would have slowed down?

Daughter is distance learning and wife is distance working. Both connecting to their school servers to access information and the odd video conference via MS Teams, etc.

Doesn't seem to be any glitches at all.

Was Eclipse Home Option 1, VM 2Mb & O2 Standard
Now Utility Warehouse (up to 16mbps) via Talk Talk

Openreach only looks after the local loop side, after the exchange it is out of their control.

The day time usage has increased but generally still below the overall evening peak from prior to the lockdown, and with so many prior to this using streaming video in the evenings the increase then is not too massive

Does that mean that eg: Talk Talk have a cable from my exchange to wherever I connect to?

They will have rented or own their own peering/backhaul sure.

No. They'll have a cable / share of a cable going to someone else who has a cable / share of a cable going to that destination or goes to someone else who may have such a cable.

You get the idea. The Internet is a network of networks and your data will have to go through multiple networks to get to some destinations.

Openreach will not be giving any capacity away for free.

Building better networks, not just faster ones.
