Hi all, my dad's broadband is very slow. I did 3 tests this morning and his router is saying he can get download speeds of 4.5 mbps, but his download speed is 500kbps for the. Last 2 years. His computer is connected via cable. Any help would be great.
Thanks Richard

Are you sure it isn't 500kBps. Note the capital B.
4.5Mbps > 500kBps (on a speed test). That is a strange coincidence, which is why I'm checking .

Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

I've just done another test and it is
Download 3.29 Mbps
Upload 0.62Mbps
Thanks

Actually the download is
488 KB/s
Thanks

Sending a pdf file can take 15 to 20 minutes via email, his graphic card drivers take 1 hour and 30 mins to download. Very very slow
|
|

So that is fine . A Byte, which most speed tests report, is 8 bits.
4.5Mbps = 4500Kbps.
4500/ 8 = 562.5KB/s. Allow for overheads and 488KB/s is OK.

Sending a pdf file can take 15 to 20 minutes via email, his graphic card drivers take 1 hour and 30 mins to download. Very very slow 0.62Mbps = 620Kbps
620/8 = 77.5KB/s.
How big is the PDF file? How big are the downloaded drivers, and how often does he need to download them?
It all looks normal so far. Is he on ADSL2+, and is FTTC available? The difference in price these days is quite small.

Plus if it is, what are the estimated speeds using the BT Wholesale checker.

There are some basic checks which may help ...
Describe the set up in the property, whats connected where, is it filtered OK ?
Is it possible that your fathers PC is creakingly old ?
|
|

That download isn't far off what you'd expect, with a line sync speed of 4.5Mbps.
With all the overhead of ADSL ATM cells, Ethernet, IP etc you'll not see more 4Mbps.
So it is within about 18% of the best case.
Go to here and check what BT think the line should be capable of:
https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

So you used to be able to use the BT wholesale checker to see what speeds you could get. This year 2020 I find it not to always detect the correct service, so I have been using the compare the market checker. Your dad looks to be on a line with a 10+ type service (ADSL). What you are looking to have is a 30+ type service (VDSL) If the filter on the left shows this as available, then I suggest you move to a VDSL/FTTC type connection for your dad. Its not much of a cost difference, but the speed change will change the broadband use. If it only shows the 10+ connections then bummer...
https://broadband.comparethemarket.com/
Once you know what you can get, you can check the different providers/costs by selecting different filters on the left. I then check the suppliers website directly and compare it to this one to find the best deal. Other checkers can also help you find similar good deals.

While pertaining to be helpful the site recommended falls into the usual traps in terms of services offered and this makes your post look almost like spam.

Will give a more comprehensive analysis of the numerous options available to people.

your post look almost like spam. I think your comment is a bit of a stretch to say the least, I can fully understand why you would want to promote the Thinkbroadband services first but to say members posts look like spam just because they contain a link to another comparison site is pushing it.
You could say links to other comparison sites are strictly not allowed and leave it at that.

I bow to the "close to spam" comments.
Interesting that the BT checker looks to have been reduced in functionality/service. I have made a note of the checker you mentioned.

Also a potential candidate for USO. Get on the blower to the ISP and BT.
10mbit on TBB speedtest = 1.25MB/s in the browser.
|
|
|
|
You also need to remember that the compare sites get kickbacks for signups via their links. So they might not show all or the best options, due to promoting the best payers.
|
|
|
What has been reduced/removed ?
The BT checker at http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome seems to have all it used to have, plus nowadays (sometimes?) shows you the actual achieved up/down sync rate.

The page to enter details is there. I just tried the address checker with and address and with ust the postcode in the address checker to get a drop-down. Not available.
The number checker still seems to be working.

For some reason it's been like this for around 1 month.

Errrrr. Yes?
Most of us know that. Perhaps you didn't notice that my post was a reply to this one.
It seemed wise to check first, as I described, in case all had returned to normal. It would have been foolish not to have done so.

Ah, I didn't try the address/postcode ones.
Thankfully the password protected version of the page, that someone linked to at some point, is still working for postcodes
|
|

Do you mean the postcode option, or postcode entry in the address option?
The postcode option does not give FTTx information any more.

Well bully for everyone who already knows.
No idea what you are talking about. I was agreeing that it's been down for about 1 month when you enter postcode and house number. The postcode lookup facility works fine for me, it's when you select a property and search you get the error.

So,
* The number checker does not work if you have a ported telephone number away from the BT network. Been like that for years. So for those not on a BT type phone line, this does not work.
* The address checker stopped working about 1-2 mths ago, so that does not work. This was my main checking tool
* The postcode checker does not show FTTC or above services, and has not done so for a few years, so that does not work.
So as a tool to check what is available for a postcode or a specific address this bt wholesale checker no longer works and hence the need to find & use something else.
I just happen to have been asked the "what can I get" from 3-4 friends in the last month so needed something else reliable and with my other hobby restricted I decided to revisit here.

Sorry, I meant the postcode option on the address checker, that is still working on the password protected version of the site. So clearly the data is still there, the code still works, but clearly is broken (or maybe disabled for some reason) on the non public version of the site

Andy
Think you mean is broken on the public version Rather than the non public version.

I keep wondering how we get to the password-protected version.

I think they did, but it's a very big haystack .

Thanks gary, but no.
It's the availability checker where the number option is working normally but the address option doesn't, and hasn't for quite a while now.
Think about it a little further, I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't been suspended due to people writing scripts to access it and so overloading the servers and database lookups.

Yeah the address checker has been broken for me as far as I am aware a month or two, sadly I cannot use my phone number due to it says it doesn't recognize it.
I can however do lookups by our NAD Key and District ID which I can get from the Openreach Checker
Wholesale normally blocks IP when that IP has been used by scripts to do lookups, I know the IP Addresses I was using back before I got fibre (4 years ago) were blocked a lot.
But I was back then checking all addresses on our exchange that didn't have fibre (+20K lookups with delays between lookups spread out over a week) and also people asking me back then to check their exchange.
I only stopped doing checks back then when BT told me to stop, so I did.
