4 bars on 3 router but 1.3mbps down

[link to this post]

Hi, we have awful speeds through coper (rural) so went for a new contract with 3 (my phone indoors is good for 3 bars). Arrived today, router shows 4 out of 5 lights for signal but best I got today was 1.3mbps down.. 0.04 up.
Speedtest on phone just now says 4.40 down and weirdly 5.5 up
Can anyone suggest what's going on please?

Phone may be using one mast and router another mast or different frequency bands.

Location of router in property will be a big factor also.

Thanks for quick reply. Moved router around to best spot where 4, sometimes 5 signal lights showed, but speeds were slow wherever. Not sure what else I can do if router is getting best signal it can....? We live on a hill overlooking a town about 3km as crow flies where apparently there are plenty of masts. Tried looking on Mastdata site but that seems not to be working at present
Help!

Try Cellmapper site for masts, its crowd sourced, so depends on people in your area having run the app on an Android phone.

If you can look at the information from your router, see if you are on Band 20 (800 mhz) or Band 3 (1800 mhz).

How does the phone perform when put down, not held, at exactly the same spot as the router was a minute previously?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Just checked. Phone (not held) was getting 7.8 down in spot where router was showing 4 bars with 1.3 down.

Had the BT guy in today to investigate why it's been dropping out. He was getting 12 down on his Vodafone mobile and I've since called a couple of 'rural broadband' specialists both have said Vodafone is the most reliable. Plus my nearest mast is Vodafone with nothing between me and it, so have signed up with them. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for your replies

So is the phone on one network and the router on another?

If so that likely explains the difference.

No, both on 3. I have cancelled the contract for the 3 router and signed up instead with Voda

More likely the phone is much later on cellular 4G technologies than the phone.
Without model numbers of phone or router, cannot tell.

Might be slower, might be faster. No way of knowing until you test. And things can change fast.

Radio systems are a lot more variable than fixed line.

Phone S7
Router Huawei B535-232
I remain baffled why a router can show 4 or 5 signal lights but still have such dire speeds.
FIngers crossed for Vodafone

The devices aren't dramatically different, one is Category 7 and the other Category 9. It could be down to the antenna of the devices, and it could be down to configuration. Three in your area may have congestion on the "mobile broadband" side of the network, compared to the "mobile phone" side of the network.

Good luck with Vodafone.

Are you now getting good and reliable speeds with Vodafone compared to Three?
