Cold feet (moving to FTTP from FTTC)

[link to this post]

Has anyone changed their mind about upgrading their broadband?

99% of the posters here are upgrading their line and I was almost ready to join the throng but after sleeping on it, I may have changed my mind.
I am on PlusNet FTTC - I have been with them since I moved from Demon 20 years ago. I have just had a noisy line fixed by Openreach which means that I am now getting a 25Mb download (10Mb up) and a 21ms Ping.

I was very tempted by the BT FTTP 500 deal at £50 pm and was about to "do it" but then...
I starting looking at my usage - home business, email, web, cloud stuff, streaming at night, video conferencing. Articles like this (https://www.maketecheasier.com/do-you-really-need-gi...) started me thinking if I actually need 500Mb download speeds and I am not sure that with just two of us in the premises, I really do.

Having a reliable fibre connection into the house appeals but now that my FTTC connection is solid, my inclination is to save about £10* a month and stick with what I have.

Plusnet FTTC includes mobile and landline calls - £44pm
BT FTTP £50pm plus mobile and landline calls.

Don't think of the speed, as you could downgrade to slower speeds after your minimum term. Think of this as a way to get away from the copper connection to a newer medium.

The full fibre cabling (FTTP) is not going to be affected by rain, snow, or the number of other people in the street whom sign up. Unlike the DSL technologies (ADSL and VDSL / FTTC).

You might find other ISPs offer FTTP with an 80 Mbps speed option, but I doubt it is any cheaper than the BT £50pm.

I agree with James, speed is just one factor, FTTP has other benefits such as zero crosstalk and no risk of things like REIN which can dog copper lines. Probably less susceptible to water damage and corrosion too.

To limit potential future stability issues I would also recommend FTTP. You could probably get Fibre 100 (150Mb line) from BT for £40 per month. Or, speak to BT and see if they can give you FTTP on either the 40Mb or 80Mb services which should come in at £27.99 per month and £34.99 per month respectively. All of these prices include line rental but doesn't include a calls package - but you could add a calls package and even on the Fibre 100 service still only be a little more expensive than your current package (depending on how many calls you make).

I've got Zen FTTC, FTTP is available I waiting to see what is happening with prices to see if its worth upgrading to a different technology

I currently pay £34.99 for FTTC (around 75mb) and Landline

Full Fibre (around 76mb) is £38.99

So currently the upgrade will be more for less.

if you have FTTP available , orders with BT will automatically be provided over FTTP for all speed tiers ( 40/10, 55/10, 80/20 ) and not just their 'ultrafast' tiers. There was a slight Change to this over recent weeks with FTTP installs orders not being accepted due to Covid ( so it would have been an FTTC to FTTC migration ) but that has now been lifted, with installs scheduled to start again in june

Is that also the case if migrating over from an existing FTTC connection? Do they automatically move you to FTTP on a migration?

should be. in the order journey it should prompt you for an appointment at some point in the order journey ( after you have entered your personal details like name, address etc )

FTTC migrations do not need an appointment, so as long as this is shown then it will be an FTTP install

Damn you all for being so logical and reasonable. I've now done the deed and signed up for the BT 500 deal.

Did you explore the option of the lower speeds or just decide to go straight to the 500?
