Facetime is limited to Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac).

Skype works on multiple devices but is quite old now.

I've used both to the US successfully.

Zoom is a newer, and more popular app.

WhatsApp can make video calls.

Signal can make video calls.

Google has a few various products as well.

I have a neighbour who spends the winter months in Gran Canaria and we use Skype on a regular basis. Despite all my computers be Apple devices I have not tried FaceTime.

Remember Both must be 'Apple' devices to do FaceTime.

We regular FaceTime our daughter from her iPhone 8 to our iPad even though we only have >3Mbps ADSL connection.

You say "old" that like it's a bad thing. The technology has evolved over the years and is more than capable.

Agreed it has evolved, and is no longer the original peer to peer, however I get more breakup on the long distance (UK to US) connection than I do with Facetime, or the corporate Zoom / Webex tools.

Ah I see.

Another thing of note, aside from Skype no longer being peer-to-peer, it's also end-to-end encrypted now.
