Broadband inner workings

[link to this post]

Hey everyone,

I wanted to know the end to end process of getting broadband to your house from the exchange and how all of that works technically - been searching all over the web and i am not getting much except for the final mile that involves digging and laying down the wires that will then need to be connected if you take the service.

for example, Giganet via cityfiber are now in my area but not available for pre-order just yet.

i would love to know more about this amazing technology after using it for years laugh

I know a little about PON's ONT's etc, but a full end to end explanation would be amazing.

thank you in advance smile

Openreach and CityFibre both use the same architecture (passive optical network) and technology (GPON) in their respective networks.

There are over one hundred alternative network builders / providers and the vast majority are also building PON style networks like these. Around half a dozen or so providers, the most notable being the likes of Gigaclear, B4RN, WightFibre and Grain Connect are building so called Point-to-point networks which vary in that a dedicated fibre is taken from the premises back to the point at which electronics/photonics/active equipment is installed. But more on that possibly later.

In the spirit of a picture is worth a thousand words…there is quite a useful YouTube video here (fast forward to 3 minutes in) from Openreach aimed at their communication provider (ISP) customer base. A few month old now so the stats are slightly out of date, but it should hopefully help to contextualise the various elements.
