Just moved from Virgin to Zen

[link to this post]

So I had my zen fibre installed today and my ping on local speed tests have gone from 6ms to 21ms, in all game servers and ping tests its increased by 10ms, I know this seems miniscule but what's keeping me from sticking to zen if my ms is doubled? all I do online is game really after work.

is this connection worth sticking with?

You are probably connected to Zen's Manchester gateways. Reconnect until you end up on a London one, you will notice the difference in your pings.

your pings were consistent on Virgin?

Many people are not fortunate enough to have that experience

How do you reconnect? Just switch modem off and on?

If yoi are using the Fritzbox supplied with the connection you can find a reconnect button under the Online Monitor section under Internet on the left hand navigation on the left hand side of the router's interface.

This will drop PPP and then reconnect, next click System and then event log.

You want to see a reference to either IXN or THN-LON in the POP information.

IXN = Interxion (London)
THN = Telehouse North Data Centre in the London Docklands
WH-MAN is an Equinix facility called Williams House in Manchester

Virgin (ADSL) => Namesco => Newnet => O2 => Plusnet => Zen => Newnet => Zen => Freeola => Vivaciti (using O2 Wholesale DSL) => Xilo (C&W Wholesale) => Xilo (O2 Wholesale) => Xilo (TT Wholesale due to O2 Wholesale closure) => Zen LLU =>> ZeN FTTP (Openreach 300 Mbps down, 47 Mbps up)
Router: Fritzbox 7530

I have had to do this with Zen for the last few months. Some sort of rebalancing going on every week or two. The above trick works every time. You soon learn the ‘good’ ports from the ‘not so good’ ones. Might need to do it several times before the change actually happens but persevere. For FTTC it doesn’t drop the link with the DSLAM, just the connection into Zen. No effect on DLM.

I'm in Cambridge so the London server would make sense, when I check my ip it says I'm from around Birmingham area, and the suggested server on speedtest is Ilkley up near yorkshire and I get 12ms, if i test a server in cambridge its 20ms compared to 6ms with Virgin, so I guess there's nothing I can do its just the routing of zen as theyre based up north?

This seems so silly from Zen, its what isps used to do in the bad old days when BT centrals were unaffordable so many isps had under provisioned BTw capacity.

Why are they running their ports so hot that they need to rebalance every 2 weeks.

Problem is I cannot think of a equivalent alternative to Zen on cityfibre.
