All ISP's the same?

[link to this post]

I have used various line based ISP's over the years. BT, Talk Talk, Sky, Plusnet and they have all been poor (sub 20Mbs) and all go off from time to time.
Am I right in thinking that like gas and electricity, I have been getting the same broadband but just paying someone else.
Now have Three 5G which when it is good is great, but when it is bad it is horrid and upload speeds are diabolical.

We cannot have fibre into the house as it isn't in the pavement for another two years.

I'd be willing to pay twice as much for a fast download and faster upload that was reliable!!!
Any recommendations?

The connection to the exchange will be the same as this is provided by Openreach. The connection from the Exchange to your ISP will vary according to the ISP but is unlikely to be your problem.

As the other poster says the limit is the openreach copper wires out of your home into the street. Check to see if Virgin Media is in your road, they may use coax cable, but can do faster speeds than the openreach wires.

If you are using FTTC and you're getting sub 20Mbps then you are unfortunately far away from your nearest street cabinet or your FTTC cabinet is suffering from crosstalk. This is probably causing also line interference's. You need to monitor your noise margins as connection drop-outs usually occur when the SNR drops to 0 and loses sync.

If you are getting sub 20Mbps on ADSL, then I guess that's a pretty good service, but if it is dropping out then you've got noise on your line.

Generally all ISPs on the Openreach network are the same. There are however, differences in router hardware. Cheaper ISPs offer poorer quality routers, which in turn will result in worse performances. For example TalkTalk only has IPv4 support while BT will have IPv6 support. Performance wise between the 2 should be the same as the routers are similar.

If Openreach FTTP is not planned for your area then you should check to see if other FTTP options are available or planned from other Altnet networks.

You don't mention where you live, so it's difficult to suggest which Altnet FTTP networks to watch out for. If you are living in a house presumably a rural/town area you can check CityFibre, Gigaclear, Virgin Media to see if they are available or planned.

If Fibre cannot be install via the street pavement ducts, the engineers can install Fibre overhead through a telegraph pole instead. In many rural areas this has been done as an alternative solution.

What is EE coverage like?

BT offer an option which will bond your FTTC with the EE mobile ...

Hi,

Thanks for that.

Yes, we are a good distance from the box.
Ive had BT and Talk Talk and both are as bad.

Cityfibre is digging up every pavement in our area (Batley, West Yorkshire) but our Lane is outside of the area that they are covering.

The idea of it not being in the pavement but via a pole would be good, but how do I get them to do that. There are more than us in the vicinity who have this problem.

You can try contacting them and providing them details about your area and suggesting them.

If you've got more people in your area with different postcodes also not being planned. You can try and get them all to register their interest in the CityFibre, Openreach, etc website. The more people from your area registering interest, the more likely it is to convince them to upgrade your area.

Now it's also possible that CityFibre will do your lane once they complete all the other areas first. You can email them and ask for more information.

I'm sure the engineers will know how to upgrade. I've watched a video on Vimeo last year from Cumbria where Openreach upgraded houses via poles as there was a large lake preventing them from installing the cables underground. They would then connect the fibre cables along the trees and cables would float above. http://www.beyondbroadband.coop/kb/using-overhead-di...
