Duplicate phone number

[link to this post]

I switched on 13th from Plusnet ADSL to Vodafone fibre, taking my phone number with me.
Since then when someone calls me sometimes the call comes on the copper line and sometimes on the fibre one. (Fortunately I still have a phone plugged in to the old socket)
I have tried to get this sorted with both Vodafone and Plusnet but I still have the problem.

I would ignore the calls coming through on the old copper line - but ensure that 100% of inbound calls are coming through on the new FTTP based service. You should be able to variously test this.

Escalate within VF if there is a porting issue. It’s in their remit to resolve.

Calls come through on one line or the other, not both. I have raised with VF but I wanted confirmation it was their responsibility. They told me they were responsible for copper to copper migrations and fibre to fibre but not copper to fibre!

They are 100% responsible now that the number has been ported to them. Whether it’s tin can and wet string or hollow core submarine fibre it’s their job to resolve.

Had your number previously been ported from BT to plusnet?

If so it appears that the port is now from BT to VF correctly but not from Plusnet to VF.

So calls within plusnet are still reaching you on the copper.

You need to find out where the copper delivered calls are coming from. If they are just one number area that indicates where the failure is (BT's original exchange host). If from a large number of areas the above is likely.

You could also ask callers what provider they use to narrow down the possibilities.

Knowing more info it is likely that I could pinpoint the switch/network that is causing the issue.

I have been with plusnet since the number was invented. I’ve been looking for a pattern for which calls come in on which line but I can’t find one! The first call I had on the old line was from my neighbour on the same exchange but then the next one was from a mobile!

Sounds like calls from VF are being routed to the new number so VF have built it at their end.

But Plusnet have yet to export the number. They have to add a porting prefix to all your calls that they receive and that gets routed to VF. They will only do this once the prefix tests correctly to a test number. (Otherwise calls will fall into a black hole or potentially go around in circles that can break interconnects) I am surprised that they are using a new prefix but every call control has a separate prefix so if you are unlucky enough to be on a new (IP) call contol this can happen.

Call flow should be

Calls are routed to Plusnet who insert the prefix and route it to VF (may go via another operator).. VF route those calls to you with the prefix stripped.

VF should route calls direct to you without tromboning via plusnet and don't need the prefix but other operators will not know this.

The OFCOM planned change is to have a central lookup database so that calls can be routed direct. Modern VOIP call-servers and Mobiles home location registers have this capability already but older TDM (PSTN switches need to be removed to enable this to work completely.

That seems to fit. I haven’t managed to find the source of all calls but those that I have show EE mobile and BT landline coming to the copper line and Vodafone mobile coming to fibre.
Should VF be sorting it or do I have to pursue PN?

VF in the first instance, as they are who your contract is with.

They should deal with Plusnet for you.
