Vpn On Or Off When running a BQM

[link to this post]

Hi All, don't know if I am in the right place to put this query, if not, my apologies beforehand.,I am new to this forum and just finding my feet with regards the internet world. I am trying to work out why my broadband is dropping out all the time so I am trying to create a bqm graph which hopefully will tell me where the fault lies, that's the crux of the matter, do I turn my vpn off to create a bqm graph or leave it on ?, hope this makes sense to all, thanks in advance for reading.

The BQM knows nothing about your VPN. It is just pinging your router's public IP address, the VPN is not involved at all.

So whether your VPN is connected or not will make no difference (assuming you are uploading/downloading similar amounts in each case).

Start the BQM while connected to the VPN it'll be running to the VPN, not the router, as by default it uses the IP the connection comes from.

Hi. See my reply below. Given you're new to the Internet world why are you using a VPN all the time? It is probably slowing down your connection and some of the sales pitches are full of misinformation.

+100. Much of the marketing is aimed at the USA with very different legals.

This is a good point, it has been a while since a created a new BQM, it will of course default to the VPN's IP address when you create it unless you change it.

One wants to make sure you are not using the VPN when setting up the BQM, unless you change the address to your own IP address when creating it. Otherwise the BQM will just be testing the connection to the VPN, which is unlikely to be what was wanted.
