[link to this post]

Hello everyone,

I'm do not want to use a extenal antenna on the roof ( it does get 40 mbs )
Is there a router I can use or some other type of item that will work

Thank you

You’ve not provided nearly enough detail in your post. Are you talking about fixed wireless, LTE?

If you're talking about 4G (LTE) or 5G (NR) radio based broadband, from people such as EE and Three, they will normally supply what looks like a typical home router, and the external antenna is optional - but depending upon your location might be needed to get a signal.

If you have a property that is tall (e.g. 3 story town house) or you live in a tall block of flats, or even just upstairs in a typical 2 story house, you might find just putting the router in a window is all you need.

But without an approximate location, rural, or not, its only guesswork.

From My point of view I would like to know about external antennas and modem/routers
I live in a very rural area with a fixed line speed well below the USO the only mobile signal is a very poor vodaphone 4G (one bar on my Iphone X) when outside.
Any reccommendations would be welcome.
Apologies for hijacking the thread.

Have a search in the Mobile Broadband forum on this site. Plus have a look at places like solwise.co.uk whom sell antenna. EE used to have a service installing external antenna along with a broadband router.

Try using a site such as Cellmapper.co.uk and your postcode to locate the closest mast to you, from any network operator. There are 4 physical operators in the UK with their own transmissions, EE, Three, O2, and Vodafone. You may find others are nearer, or that your low Vodafone signal is the only choice.

Cellmapper.co.uk doesn't work for me, cellmapper.net does.

Good point, thank you. Apologies, after 10pm at night tiredness is my only rationale.

It might be that the way to get the best (an acceptable) signal is to mount the antenna as high as practically possible since most building materials are radio opaque to an extent and attenuate the signal giving you a lower throughput (at best) or a flaky/non-existent connection (at worst).

Antennas don't have to look like a builder's bumcrack - that's down to antenna choice & research.

A bit late to the thread but don't waste your money on antena, I have tried a few and found them next to usless. What you need is one of these https://mikrotik.com/product/sxt_lte6_kit .I have been using one for four years it has been faultless. It is an antena, modem and router combined powered by POE from the lan cable. It runs RouterOS which can be intimidating but just put your sim in and it should just work. I am over 4Km from the mast and get 55-60 Mbs. You will need to know where your mast is as it is directional.
