VPN speed

When I was on copper FTTC broadband with a download speed of between 73 & 76 my VPN was at the same speed. I have now got fibre 900 but I cannot get any faster than 200 with a VPN connected. It is a good speed but I am just curios about why the the massive speed drop .

VPN needs processing power so it depends on your router. Some of the DreyTek routers will run faster I think.

The VPN solution might have a hard limit on throughput?

Also depends on the VPN server, I use work one which is fast but if free windscribe or proton never faster than 60MB on a 500MB connection

Could be a couple of reasons.

When you use a VPN you are sending data to the provider's servers and they send it on making it look like it came from them. This means all your traffic is passing through their network and 'consuming' part of whatever bandwidth they have provisioned with their supplier. This has a cost associated with it which they have to manage.

If you are paying for the service you could contact them and ask if there is a more expensive package you can move on to which will allow higher throughput.

If you're not paying for the service then I'd say you are lucky that they are generous enough to allow you 200Mb/s.

The second possibility is that your router is the bottleneck but 200Mb/s sounds too nice and round a number for that. So most likely you've hit the limit imposed by your VPN provider.

Are you using your router or computer for the VPN?
It's quite possible this is the case as VPNs can be busy. I'd only use a VPN if you have good reason to - mostly from home you wouldn't.

Emphasising seb’s comment : don’t be taken in by marketing aimed at the USA. The UK legals are very different.

Thank you every body for giving me food for thought. great suggestions. My router is a Asus rt 88u and its a paid VPN. The Vpn is on the computer not the router.
In answer to Seb I use word puzzle and music quiz sites which can have a lot of pop ups making them unusable and for some reason they vanish when using my VPN. I am going to try all of the suggestions posted in reply except the router unless someone can say my router is a proplem. Will be on to my VPN provider to see if they do cut the bandwidth.

What spec is your PC?

Do you think computer spec may be a problem? Sounds interesting. My specs are as below
Intel i7 9700 CPU
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus pro motherboard
16GB of ddr4 ram
1GB ethernet port
windows 10 OS
