Advice Neede Please

[link to this post]

Sorry, but this will be probably seen as a numpty question! My fibre (http) was recently upgraded to c500Mbps. As part of that, my upload speed was increased and I now regularly get c 67MPS. However, my download speeds are always limited to just under 100Mbps (c 96Mpbs) I changed my M/B last year and, according to the manual, the ethernet should be capable of up to 1000 The router in use is a BT Smarthub2 Can anyone give me pointers to increase the speeds before I have a moan to BT?

Regards

H

Is the Ethernet cable you are using capable of gigabit? Quite likely that could be the limiting factor.

And check the LAN port connection rate in the OS.

Are you connected via a cable, or are you using powerline extenders?

Your download speeds being just under 100M/s are indicative of your network running on 100Mb/s, although this is not conclusive. If you ever get noticeably above 100, then you can rule that possibility out.

Change the ethernet cable, I had the same problem when my FTTP was installed.

It can also be hidden as "power saving" or "green" or similar - Fritz! devices definitely do this.

Many thanks to all for your responses. Having checked the ethernet cables, they all appear to be Cat5 so I'm assuming there lies the problem. I've ordered Cat6 cables which should be with me tomorrow and will let you know if successful.

That should sort it

Cat 5 tops out at 100 Mbps, Cat 5e at 1000 Mbps and cat 6 at 10 gigabits.

a decent cat5e cable can do 10gbits at short distances
