Migrating from ADSL to FTTP

[link to this post]

I have a friend, who's with Sky BB on ADSL, who's about paying £70 month for BB and voice.
He's asked my advice.

His local exchange has been upgraded since I last checked and he can now get FTTP.

The question I have from him (and maybe for me as we're also expecting FTTP in the coming year) is what is the best way to migrate to FTTP and retain one's landline number, with a VoIP provider.

I'm thinking to port the landline number to Andrews and Arnold's VoIP service, though their FTTP
looks a little expensive for him, as a low level user, where he could get entry level FTTP for £23.

What is most sensible way to proceed?

Can he get FTTP connected while still having his Sky BB connected, then cancel /port that later?

The latter would be mine

Get FTTP in and running, then port the number to their chosen VoIP provider. That will cancel the Sky service, but as soon as the port is complete, inform SKY to make sure. Remember, there are possible cancellation fees to consider.

I forgot to say, he's long out of contract with Sky BB.

  • Get the FTTP in from a different ISP as a NEW install and not a replacement for the existing ADSL. Leave the existing ADSL running
  • Get VoIP from a VoIP supplier on a trial basis with a temporary landline number, preferably not either of the ISPs - it is better to have your phone from a different supplier to avoid hassle with phone numbers when changing ISP in the future
  • Check that you are content with the new VoIP line
  • Port the original landline number to the new VoIP line, which should cancel the ADSL too

Obviously, you need to do your due diligence and confirm that your chosen suppliers along each step of the way can do what is expected of them, eg that you can get a trial landline number and port later.

Whatever he does, do not tell Sky anything until FTTP is in and working plus the VoIP is ported.

When FTTP is available order a service a supplier. Don't mention the Sky service.

Create an account with a VOIP Isp such as Voipfone which should work via ADSL.

When FTTP is working and your friend is happy with it, port the phone number to the Voip supplier.
This will terminate the ADSL service.

And as said above, *don't* give notice of termination to Sky.
