Best Gaming Router Upgrade for FTTP in 2025?

[link to this post]

What is a really good gaming router? I have FTTP soon (currently using an Asus one which is about 3 years old, from my old DSL connection). Just thinking of upgrading — any suggestions?

Any Ethernet connection is going to work fine.

Depends.

If you want to stick with ASUS you have the RT-BE88U - Quad core 2.6ghz processor, 2gb RAM and a dedicated gaming ethernet port that it applies its own packet priority to without configuring manually on the router.

How much you want to spend ?

What's your current router? What's your planned FTTP speed?

Your current router may do just fine, so I'd start with that and see how well it works.

If you're specifically concerned about speed of wifi (e.g. you want Wifi7, assuming you have any client devices capable of that) then you don't necessarily need to replace the router. You could instead add one or more decent wifi access points like Unifi U7 Lite. This will give you superb wifi coverage if you locate the access points suitably and cable them back to the router. But the need for power injectors (or a PoE switch) can make this a slightly messy solution, so I'd understand if you prefer an "all-in-one" router. It's a bit like hifi separates versus the ghetto blaster.

Nice analogy. Depending on the size of your property it may or may not be really worth the effort, expense, and extra power consumption. smile
