New TFT...

[link to this post]

Hi, my 15" TFT from several years ago is finally giving up the ghost, and I need a replacement. The obvious choice is a 17" TFT or is there value in going to a 19" as the cost is not a great deal more!

Also, this DVI business - I believe that is 'Digital Video Input' and am I right in thinking that this will replace the 'normal' type of socket eventually? My current graphics card does not have a DVI socket but I suppose it's good to future proof.

What about wide? Is this the future? Or stick with 4:3 - so much to think about

I'm not a gamer; email; Office suite and internet surfing.

Thoughts and views welcome please.

Thanks - Blue

I have a fancy for this one for what it's worth. linky

From what others say widescreen is good if you watch a lot of movies, otherwise stick to the norm.

As good a price with DVI as it gets I reckon.

Nope...but they have sold out a few times so they are moving.

Not a bad site from the manufacturers if you click on their link on the page, they seem to know what they are doing.

I don't play games or watch movies - but I still have a widescreen monitor - why? because excel spreadsheets are soooo much easier to manage on a widescreen monitor!

What about basic web design [I left that bit off!] would it be okay in wide?

Yep, I do quite a bit of that as well, and it is handy for when you have pages with lots of nested tables and long lines of code.

Hi B, this week a line has appeared all the way down one part of the screen, and it has been throwing a small wobbly now and then like it may be about to collapse!

Also, compared to a recent wide laptop the brightness is down but that may be due to an older generation of manufacture etc.

Thanks - Blue

I have an Acer and I must admit I am very happy with it, it is 4:3 and if I was going to replace it then I would get a widescreen, mainly because it is better for video editing.

DVI is certainly better, and a lot of video cards only have DVI sockets on them, mind you they normally put a convertor in the box.

But saying that, I have seen a monitor working on DVI and VGA and there is not that much of a difference.

I want a monitor that turns on it's side, so it is more like an sheet of paper..

It depends on your budget.but if you can go for a 19inch,very nice to use.
