New PSU- SATA HDD not working

[link to this post]

Having recently bought a new PSU and case, I connected everything up including the SATA drive to one of the 4 SATA power cables. When I switched the computer on I was given a message saying that there was a hardware error.

I tried each of the other 3 SATA power cables to no avail. I had no idea what to do so I tried a 4-pin to SATA power conversion cable as a last resort. I again started the computer and it worked.

To cut a long story short, why does the SATA power cable not work?!

The PSU is a Thermaltake TR2 470W and HDD is 160GB Maxtor Diamondmax 10.

Only on some models!! The DiamondMax 10 is a certified Maxtor I'm afraid

youre the lucky one then

Still not buying a maxtor (even as a rebranded seagate) again, I'll stick with my ibm and seagates

Hmm, I can't see there being a problem with the PSU considering it's brand new, and I also tried all of the SATA connections. More likely to be the HDD. I fancy a new one anyway.

I'll phone the computer company up and see what they say.

That doesn't make sense. If the HDD works when connected to a SATA converter as you said in your original post how can the fault lie with the hard drive?
Logic says it's a problem with the SATA power cable from the PSU.

Faulty psu unit. It is as simple as that - you ruled the hdd out by the adapter.
