Scan - Advice Please, ie HELLLLP!!

Hi folks,

long story > short, so here goes..

I bought a [very nice] PC from Scan, which arrived on Saturday. Great but so far I have had many BSOD's, a missing [and replaced] backup disc, 2 thumb-screws for case [side is loose]- the IR sensor still hasn't arrived yet [it's been posted on but poss. late].

The BSOD's have been caused by

1: paging file in a NON-paging area,
2: graphics drivers [on a LAAVLEEE XFX 8800gts [niiiiice grphics]
3: ZoneAlarm has been blamed on their 3XS system crashes / faults too.
also knacked is..
4: the DVD-ROM works very intermittantly [normally borked]
5: the DVD-RW sometimes didn't read data [driver] discs either.

Here are my choices -
* Let them sort it [either take it back or will send 3rd party engineer].
* Let them take it back and replacement
* Just get my

Me I'd take the money and shop elsewhere, but I don't like Scan.

Terrible for any company to dump that standard of product on a customer. I would be demanding my money back. If you wanted to buy another from them you can do it as you have your cash, I wouldn`t.

Fair enough - I'll look out the driver discs tomorrow & get it all boxed up.

Bummer really, the tech etc were fantastic

I'll let you all know how they go giving full refunds - pity...

Fairy nuff - as I said to Levi, I'll be sorting out the drivers discs tomorrow and calling them.


Now, who would you recommend?


...and I had another BSOD there when trying to install new sound [X-FI] drivers.

...and the WinTV Nova-t plus <any> media players stopped being 4 speaker stereo, down to 2 back speakers only. they sounded like the mid channel tbh.

*oh well.

I'd say take a look at overclockers.co.uk (yes I know people don't like these but I do and have had none of the issues from scan) or vadim computers (may be a little more expensive but they are a good company in my experience. kustompcs are also good but dont have all the equipment youre after listed (probably can get it) and dont actually make computers anymore (not sure if you could convince them with a big order like yours though )
Personally I would just go on a hunt for all the bits from the best places and then put it together myself but it depends on how much effort youre prepared to go through on a pc or you could just buy a mac pro

My thoughts -

I accept things go wrong, more important to me is how they are sorted out - to that end I have had no problem with Scan - when my PC arrived with a dead hard disk, they sent a new one out no problem (they would have sent someone to sort it). it meant I had to re-install Windows (which I would have probably done anyway to the way I like). From what I have read - it is unlikely you'd get that service from Overclockers.co.uk that has been mentioned

It could be the problems you are getting are because the machine has been shaken around during delivery and things are loose/damaged inside - I would want a replacement or money back in that case

If it was mine, I would give them the opportunity to sort it - if they don't quibble, then you have an idea of how they will treat you later

I would just send the whole thing back and either get them to replace it with a new one (do it on a swap) or go buy it elsewhere.

I called today and asked for a refund - I was offered an upgrade from the present 6600 dual core to the 6700 - he then went from that to upping the graphics card from the 8800gtS to the 8800gtX, PLUS a complete rebuild / new system [iirc] - that's over
