Couldn't build it this cheaply?

[link to this post]

Considering this (the 7600) as we have enough working monitors and speakers lying around, and some very buggy Win98SE boxes which are just too much of a pain to keep working - not to mention still being IDE HDs, AGP graphics with no recent drivers available, old fashioned RAM, no network port, no USB2 etc etc.

Don't think I could save much by attempting to build myself to the same spec and a lot less aggro. Novatech came fairly well up the customer satisfaction list on a recent survey.

Seems like a very good deal to me - opinions?

Should have added http:// before www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/pcrange.html?ISP

My last desktop came from Novatech for exactly the same reason. Found a box that was the same spec as one I was planning to build (apart from a DVD rewriter) at much less than I could source the components. I can commend Novatech as a company as can several friends of mine.

Some suppliers offer a free upgrade to Vista (+ p&p), some offer a half price upgrade, and some (Novatech?) nothing at all. See ... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/expressupgrade.mspx

It might not seem important now, but you could regret missing out in a couple of years time.

Well to build from parts this spec as bits would probably cost

Thanks for the Medion links MrPete. Looks interesting, and I would consider it if I lived a bit closer to an Aldi store.

The Medion seems to have a graphics card - 7650GS - that no one else has heard of, if my understanding of the german web pages that refer to it are correct, in fact I think they say there is no such beast.

I quite like the inclusion of 54G wireless and Windows Works in the Medion package.

The Vista upgrade issue is a bit more confusing. It certainly seems to be free from Aldi. Novatech say they give you an upgrade coupon, but you need the number of the coupon to access the Vista upgrade website pages to find out exactly what the deal is. I *think* it will end up as a free upgrade, apart from "handling" costs by MS. That was the way it worked with WIN98SE, where I paid maybe
