Windows running slow

I have a Dell PC, with 1gb of Ram. I seem to have a problem with the processor in the sense that applications take forever to load after I click. Half the time my PC just ends up crashing. I have no viruses, etc. Any suggestions on how I can improve the reponse of the applications.

honestly, its a dell, do a complete clean install and then remove all the extra junk from it. It should work a bit better after that.

Please note I have a huge dislike for dell pc's, they have been a pita for me whenever I have had to use one or maintain it.
