My old XP drive refused to boot up no matter what I did. Anything I selected to try, safe mode, boot from recovery cd etc, resulted in, ' Press F10 for recovery'. I'm not very knowlegable with computers so I bought another unit with Windows 7.
The disk was spinning ok but I don't know how you test a hard drive. The question I would like to ask is, if I hook up the XP IDE drive to my new computer via an exterior enclosure, will I run the risk of damaging the new one? I would like to be able to transfer some files, then wipe the old disk and use it for backups, if at all possible. Thank you.

No. Just run a surface scan on it before getting any data off it.

Would take off the data then run tests. Theres nothing more annoying than realising that you only had 90 mins disk life left to safely remove your valuable data after you've just spent an hour and a half running tests...

corruption might be the result of malware...
I recomend you do a virus check on all files you copy from that drive.
also plug it in after booting the machine, to minimize the risk of it booting from that disk and any rootkit virus becoming active on the new machine.

Check the disk manufacturers website, or try HD Tune which has a fully functioning 15 day trial period.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I'll make sure that Windows 7 is already running before I connect the old hd/drive, scan the files then check the disk. Thanks again guys.

Did you recently run Windows Update automatically on the XP drive? If so there was an issue with some people's computers not even being able to boot into safe mode after updating. Take a look at the Windows forum on here - I think I read about it on Friday. Just a thought but of course it may not apply and you might just have a faulty hard drive or malware lurking.

lenaspell, I'm absolutly stunned reading your rely!
That is exactly what happened. The last screen I saw was to the affect, - Do not turn off your computer, Windows will close after installing updates. The next morning I switched on, black screen ' Press F10 for recovery', but it never did. Thank you Len, at least I know it wasn't the hd/drive.

Hopefully you managed to find the link - if not let me know and I'll take a look. Depending on whether you have the XP cd-rom or not (perhaps it was an OEM version without disk) depends on how easy it is to recover but it may need full support from Microsoft.
Glad to be of assistance albeit sorry you are in the position in the first place from an authorised update.
